My first German surplus rifle; a Walther AC44. Opinions welcome.

Hello there!

I am brand new here and thought I would show my rifle and pick people's brains a bit. Now, I know it's a little cliché to join a forum and immediately start going "Here's my rifle!" but I have full intentions on making this thing a shooter and that requires knowledge greater than my own so as to not ruin this rifle. I'll get into the stock problem later (wondering if I should make a separate post or not?), but for now I'll just put what I've got out there and see if there's anything I'm missing.

I found this thing at a gunshow earlier this year and paid $1800 for this and a mint Arisaka Type 99 in a package deal. Also came with a complete spring kit and I found an original safety assembly on GB for $120-ish. What I think I know about it is as follows: It's a Walther made AC44 K43 with a miss-matched bolt & carrier assembly. From my own research it seems like a late war rifle and should not have the bolt hold open. The bore is really good but the muzzle is beat up, however I haven't had a chance to bullet-tip test it yet. There is very little rust and all the metal seems to be in great shape. I am sending in my rear receiver cover to apfeltorlos for a weld job as well as a shooters kit. Like I said above, the stock is questionable at best and I would not shoot it as a precaution. The stock has multiple cracks, missing chunks, a previous repair and the recoil lug moves 1/32 of an inch.

Other than that stuff I'm really not sure about anything else. I will post some pictures below of the rifle and it's most significant markings. If anyone sees anything I might be oblivious to I'd like to hear it.

Thanks you for reading!

Have you taken the bolt assembly out and apart yet to see if the bolt matches the rifle/bolt carrier? Also check the rear of the receiver where the safety is and look for any dents/cracks. The price you mentioned is a solid deal, especially with an Arisaka also. More knowledgeable people will be here soon to comment on the stock and other areas. One member has a database to check against to see if rifles have popped up elsewhere or parts of those rifles. Didn't see the receiver or bolt carrier number pop up in Clause Espeholt's database; you may have found a "new" one lol.

I'll work on some more pictures of the internals, from memory all bolt components match. No cracks to be found at the rear of the receiver. I guarantee this one is new to the this forum as it left the collection of an 80 year old man that had it for quite some time.

From my browsing here (in this thread specifically: https://www.k98kforum.com/threads/comparison-value-g43-ac44-vs-k43-ac44.41484/) it's said that AC44 SN: 7051 is the third highest serial AC44 known. How does my 6916 rate on that scale?

So it appears my bolt carrier and firing pin match but the bolt and locking lugs do not. It seems to me that the bolt and locking lugs match but the numbers are so faint I'll leave that up to the masses.

The magazine is cool. Has the rib on the bottom. This is not as common as others.

As for the SN you have to account for the letter "n" on yours. I think 1944 ended in q letter block. There are several thousand after yours before it resets to no letter block in 1945.

I didn't know about 1944 production ending in "q". Does that make this a 1945 example? If so why is it stamped AC44?

It is 1944. Numbering starts the year at 1 no letter and goes to 9999 then starts over at 1a to 9999a then 1b and so on and starts over the following year as 1 no letter to 9999, 1a etc. Making yours towards the end of 1944

I have this original German WWII buttplate, the door is repro, maybe you can swap it from your current rotten buttplate. It's on the FS forum. Or just replace it and might be interested in the broken buttplate with door.

Thanks for the offer but I have a repro one coming for the repro stock I'm putting on it.

When you say it should not have the bolt hold open are you referring to the hold open latch on the bolt carrier? or the last round bolt hold open in the receiver?

The bolt hold open on the carrier for disassembly. I could be wrong, but since none of the carrier/bolt/top cover pieces match the rifle serial it seems likely.

I looked it up in Weaver’s Hitler’s Garand book. In the “p” block they began omitting the bolt carrier hold open. So you should be good.

That is out of print. Copies you can find are very expensive. But the author has announced he will be releasing a revised book(s) with much more information than the first book has.
He’s already released his new set, it is called ‘Rough Forged’ its a two volume set and full of a lot of information, I highly suggest it to anyone interested in German self loading rifles
