Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and new to the world of milsurp. That being said, I've recently been able to get my hands on one of my all time dream guns. However like most newbies, I have no idea about the condition of my rifle or it's possible history or its authenticity. Do you guys think you could tell me a little about my rifle? :)

Here's the link! (The forum website wouldn't let me post the actual pictures here because of file size)

PS: The sling and cleaning rod are reproduction pieces I bought myself. And all the parts on the rifle do NOT have matching serials. I bought it as is.

Hey Rose, you have a laminate stock early war rifle made by the Mauser factory. As I am sure you know most of the parts are not matching. It’s a very nice starter gun. The H in the stock indicates that whatever gun it originally belonged to was an Army contract rifle. Welcome to the forum

When you say Army contract, that just means it was issued to standard infantry in the Heer/Wehrmacht right?

As far as the stock goes, is it original? It has so much wear and tear it looks like it hasn't ever been rebuilt

yes correct heer. The gun is a mix master probably reassembled by the importer from a collection of parts or at a depot from parts after the war. It is not a german depot reowork. Original is a broad term when referring to guns like this. It is a german stock.

edit: a stock rework if done by a german depot is a plus as it adds collector value. The stock does not look to have been reworked by a bubba or any depot for that matter. What hurts a pure example is when a bubba cleans or messes with the stock. This gun being non matching the value is more forgiving if it had been tampered with.

Thanks for the information! I'm thinking of getting a bayonet for my K98 (won't be matching obviously), but should I expect any fitment issues? Are they all universal fit?

Bayonets were never matched to rifles. Matching bayonets are a thing of course, but refers to the blade matching the scabbard. The standard S84/98 III bayonet will fit any K98.
