My stripper clips don’t fit?

Hello, I purchased some Portuguese FNM 8mm surplus today so I could shoot my K98 for the first time, however the clips don’t fit? According to what I’ve read the clip with the three notches on the side is the correct clip, but the clips won’t insert, or if they do they don’t fit nice at all. This is not what I have seen online of stripper clips inserting easily and fitting nicely and easily ejecting when closing the bolt. Neither does the two notched clip fit well either. Are these the wrong clips or is something wrong with them? Or is there a problem with the rifle itself? Input would be appreciated.

Hmm that's rather strange, I've got a lot of Yugoslav 8MM stripper clips. Take a caliper and measure length, width and depth (how thick they are) of those clips and I'll measure mine as well and post the numbers I get later.

Aren’t the 2 bump clips for another caliber?
Do you have any other brand of ammo on hand? if yes try it in the same clip. I recently had a problem w/S&B 8mm at a shoot. It loaded hard into the strippers (3 bump plated repros that I’ve used before w/out a problem) and I was unable to push the rounds off the clip into the magazine, had to pull them out of the clips & load each individually. they all fired fine. (not new stock, the box is pale green w/‘80s style markings)
there are some differences in ammo dimensions CIP (euro) vs SAAMI (US) and variations of tolerance. I found that PPU cases worked fine in the same stripper.

when I measured, PPU cases had a smaller thinner head than the S&B & the extractor groove diameter was larger for the s&b, which is why they were sticky in my strippers. I’ve had no trouble w/any other brass I can recall (in that respect) mostly I shoot PPU cuz its cheap & reloads well.

Try the same ammo in some of the 1 piece ‘Turkish’ style clips, in my experience they fit more loosely than the German steel type.

I will do this when I get home. Before I checked the forum, I bought more Portuguese surplus from this guy, and it appears lots of the stripper clips are different. Some are three notch, some are two. The three notched ones most likely should be all Portuguese FNM made, and don’t fit into my K98. The two notched are for a different caliber, 6.5, which is why they don’t fit nicely in the rifle, but 8x57 fits on the clip. However when I bought more ammo, 5 rounds were on a German made DWM marked clip and the clip fits. So I deduce that the Portuguese clips are made to fit another Mauser. I will take it again to the range on Monday and load the loaded clip to confirm. I will measure them as you suggest, because I find that strange, and I can’t find anyone writing of the same problem anywhere online.

Yes, it seems the two bumps are for 6.5 Swede, but the Portuguese three bump clips didn’t fit either. I didn’t load the S&B into a clip, I just loaded them individually so I will give this a try at the range on Monday. I am guessing the same issue will occur. The S&B and Portuguese surplus shot well through the rifle. However the rifle shoots at least two feet high, and I am aiming at the grass to hit the target at 100m so there is that problem to figure out haha.
