Hi all,

I came across a gem today and picked it up. 1907 Mauser Oberndorf. I love the pre-war rifles and they just don't come up any more in nice shape. I purchased along with a 1879 m71 Amberg. (More on that one later)

Matching except the rear band and rear sight. If you look at the buttplate, looks like it went through Rastatt at one point. (Probabably restocked there-- stock is a Spandau)

Feedback is welcomed as always.

This is one of Fergus old rifles, he has been selling some off lately, some that made their way through LR. - he bought it sometime in 2006, was a thread on it at Gunboards, but purged as i couldn't find a link to it. He didn't say much anyway, just that it was a recent pickup.

A very nice example, not rare maker-date, but very difficult to find this nice and original.

The rifle looks the same, even the reversed cross bolt is the same. The rifle, a Mauser/07 is pretty common for a pre-war, this was the year (1906-1907) the arsenals were getting ready for the Kar.98a, and DWM and MO, who had been sidelined for G98 production in favor of the arsenals, were getting the contracts to make large numbers. This would not last long, 1907 was the last large contract for Mauser before the war; DWM would make a lot 1906-1908, but it too would stop as it was introducing the MG08 and P08 in 1908. Any rifle (G98) 1909-1912 is rare, 1913-1914 are very tough also.

Anyway, if you do disassemble the rifle, do jot down the barrel code. It would be helpful, though no need unless you are going to do it anyway. BTW, thanks to Jon Speed we know approximately how many G98's Mauser made this year. In 1907 they made 91,000 G98's, the most of any maker in 1907 (by far, though DWM made 73,000, the second highest).

Thanks as always Paul, it may have been I bought it from Fergus.

Never met the man, but I do believe that is his area. He use to own a good number of rifles, a couple have recently been showing up on auction.
