Hey guys,
This is probably a newbie question, but would a 1941 BNZ Steyr EVER have been a sniper rifle? I've mentioned already on the introduction and optics page about the fact that I'm going to add (without drilling/tapping) BNZ single claw mounts to my BNZ 1941 (serial 3775) for display purposes.
It's de-activated (sadly) and I plan on fitting the mounts without solder or damaging the receiver in any way, perhaps with a water based adhesive which will be plenty strong enough considering it's not a shooter.
So my first question is:
Were Steyr producing BNZ sniper rifles in 1941?
If the answer is no, never mind, I'm still going to make my poor mans paper weight sniper all the same. BUT another couple of points I'd like to query out of interest regarding the project...
Is it true that a fair amount of early BNZ rifles were used by the SS?
What scopes would have been likely used on sniper rifles in 1941?.. And which scopes definitely would NOT have been? I seem to remember reading somewhere that there were no military contracts for scopes in 41, and the snipers in that era were using commercially bought scopes.
The vast majority of BNZ Steyr snipers I see with the BNZ single claw mount are using DIALYTAN 4X, but I have a feeling these rifles are later, 42/43 onwards? One thing I have noticed is they seem to always have the larger metal cup type butt plates (not sure of the official name), but my BNZ 41 has just a flat butt plate. Which I feel (from trawling images online) is extremely rare for snipers but not unheard of...
exhibit A:

An SS Sniper using what looks like a Zeis Zeileiver or Dialytan 4x with double claw mounts. But most importantly it just has the flat metal butt plate on the stock... and also some kind of funky mono-pod?! No idea on the date of this photo unfortunately, maybe someone can date it by their uniform config?
So really what I'm asking is; If you guys were forced to choose a scope/mounts for a 41 BNZ, what would you choose and why?
I'll post some photos of the rifle in another thread as it's all matching numbers, so would be good for the photo reference bit on the forum.
Cheers from the UK,
Paul.
