NFA MP40 price check

I moved to Utah about 4 months ago and that opens the option for my to finally own full auto. I’m wanting to just get a fun full auto MP40 and not concerned about numbers matching or the finish perse, how much should I expect to budget for one, or are the prices all over depending on what I’m looking for?

Even something like a tube gun, transferable, would probably set you back ~$20K.
Agreed. The common tube guns were like 8-12k not terribly long ago. Now 20 or more seems common, especially at the big auctions that draw all the eyes and wallets.

Right, there's no such thing as a definite price range anymore. Buyers are all in competition with each other, driving prices up. Even fixed prices are hard to find and are used only by a very few dealers. Everyone else uses the various auction formats, maximizing prices realized, along with buyer's premiums and fees.

Plan on spending $20K and up for a nice MP40 tube gun. All matching and in nice shape? The sky's the limit. I've seen them push and exceed $50K recently.

I have been watching the MP40 market for a few years now. A great place to keep an eye on is sturmgewehr.com which has had a few MP40s come up, including a few now in various states of transfer-ability. Here is my own personal data on the MP40 market:

Matching Complete Parts Kits: $5k+
Tube Guns: $15-20k
Mismatched/refinished/altered: $25-28k
Matching/Collectable: $26-34k
Very Nice/Highly Collectable: $30k+

The numbers fluctuate quite a bit. Some sellers with excellent reputations get more than average guys showing up to sell a gun. Some guns sell to a buyer who has deep pockets and jumps on something others may find a bit overpriced. I advocate for you to watch sturm and gunbroker, and get on machinegunboards.com. Those guys sell to each other a good rates once you get to know the right people. Good luck- happy hunting.

You can check this out too, it’s updated, though usually a few quarters behind. When I had bought a C&R STEN MKIII the prices were just about spot on, as well as spot on when I sold it. Agreed that there is a lot that goes into the price, RampantLion is pretty spot on.
