PPU Prvi Partizan Ammo MP44 DK44 PTR44 Mag. How to tell if it will work and fix for bad mags.

The images below show you what the cartridges should look like when you put two rounds in the mag.

The mags with the red x. Note that the tip of the cartridge is not visible from the side. If you load a mag with two rounds and it looks like this the magazine will cause failures. The fix is to remove material from the inside of the mag lip so that the round points up.

Next photo: Notice the round in the mag noticeably points upward. This mag will load at least 25 rounds, likely 30, and it will function properly. The rifle will cycle. Make sure to tap the back of the mag gently before loading the mag into the rifle to make sure the follower has engaged the rounds as the PPU ammo is out of speck so it can cause the follower to get stuck.

The mag I got with my DK44 rifle did not seat the cartridges properly. I bought three more of these mags from them and they all are work perfectly, seat the cartridge correctly and work out of the box. I am very happy that the new mags I bought from DK are excellent construction and work. Not sure why the one with the rifle needed mods.

Aftermarket mags likely won't work and very possible originals won't due to PPU out of spec. Load two rounds and check the position of the rounds.

If you have several aftermarket mags you can mix and match followers and sometimes this will work to get rounds seated properly. Thanks.

One thing I forgot to mention. Gently tap the back of the mag after loading to make sure the follower is pushing the rounds up all the way. The PPU ammo kind of gets the follower stuck.

Best to ditch the repro mags and get originals. I have a number of originals and have found that the East German ones work the best. My personal opinion is that they were probably the best ever made for the rifle, probably because they were manufactured by one company under peace time conditions.

100% agree on the 1001 marked mags, most reliable I have in the collection.

These are so cool, and I want one to run for fun in competitions. I worry about ammo and the sorts.

How do you all have these and shoot them as much as you do?

When ammo is available (PPU), you have to stock up. I currently have about 1000 rounds of PPU and powder, primed cases, and bullets for another 1000 rounds. I have another bunch of East German, Czech, and WWII German rounds too but I won't shoot any of that. You have to buy it when you see it.

Are these worth getting into? Like to shoot a lot or should I avoid.

Only you can say if it’s worth it to you. Many of us here are collectors with a passion for the history and have dedicated a significant chunk of change to participate in it. If you’re not passionate about the history or the function I would not think it to be worth it.

Like wilhelm however, I have an alert out for any time there is ammo available, and I bulk buy to stock up. I’m not out at the range every weekend though either. If you’re doing competitions, you’ll have to … stock up a lot.

When I had the PTR44 I tried an original mag didn't function with the PPU. Do the East German ones? Thanks.

Depends how deep your pockets are. These are mostly collector rifles and for people interested in WWII and Military History. I probably shoot mine more than most people who have one. Ammo is expensive now and the rifle is expensive. Luckily the DK rifle is current production so if it breaks you can likely get it fixed unlike PTR ones. Really depends how badly you want it and how much you can spend. For me it is worth it because I love this rifle.

Update: With this mag mod you can reliably cycle 28 rounds in the mag. Perfect function. I love this rifle. I am thinking the problems Ian from Forgotten Weapons had were likely due to the mags combined with PPU ammo.

Update. Got three new mags from DK. They all work perfectly out of the box, no modification required. loaded 30 rounds. I am very happy with the rifle. Shot 500 rounds. Works great.

Did DK modify their mags? Just wondering why your new ones work flawlessly vs. the one that shipped with the gun?
I don't think they modified the mags. They looked untouched. I ordered 3 additional mags from them expecting to need to modify them. They, however, work perfectly and are well made. Solid construction.

The new ones work flawlessly because for some reason the geometry is different so the rounds sit properly in the magazine without any need for modification. Like in my pictures above. The tip of the round points up if you put two rounds in the mag. i can load 30 rounds in the new mags I ordered from them and they cycle without issue.

We do change the angle of the followers, so it fits the ppu ammo better
