shorten k98k stock

Found a BYF44 at a LGS offered as a bolt-mismatch-otherwise-correct rifle. The briefest of look overs told me it had been re-barreled and the original SN had been applied. I also noticed the barrel step was well forward of the upper band, indicating a shortened stock. I seem to recall someone was shortening K98K stocks but I don't remember who or why. Can anyone help here?

Or, was it a Yugo Barrel??
That step is longer on the ones I have seen...

I think you are both saying the same thing. Probably a Yugo stock on a standard K98k barreled action. The shortened stocks are still readily available from the major parts dealers at reasonable prices.
