Local gunshop has a sportered K98 that my son is absolutely nuts over. He wants to buy it and restore it to its former configuration. Sportered at the middle band forward. It will require a new sock/handguard, new bands, and bayonet lug. It’s a bolt mismatch but trigger guard and floor plate all matching the receiver. The bore is beautiful and should make a good shooter.

I know this can be a money pit but I also think it will be a good father/son project.

Any input on current value would be appreciated.
 
I guess the biggest issue will be the stock. Handguards and other parts not too bad unless you're trying to hold out for 'exact' parts. These aren't the economical deal they used to be mostly because of the price/availability of quality stocks. Some nice repops are available and there are still salvage stocks around. I guess it really matters how much you can get the base gun for.
 
Personally, I wouldn't want to spend over $350 to come out "even" at the end in comparison to a "complete" mixmaster/put together K98k. Re-militarizing these rifles is fun though!
 
^^^ Yeah 350 is about the break even point unless you just happen to have come by an awesome deal on a stock.
 
So… If If I just absolutely had to have it , I would get the repro flat buttplate walnut stock from Numrich and modify it for a larger takedown disk and cupped buttplate to came out with something like this..

I just love walnut stocked guns and the wood project would be a fun part of the experience plus the stock is only $160 which is hard to beat.
 
I have rescued several as a retirement hobby. Yes stocks are the hardest and most expensive item if your going for 100% correct for the year/maker/block. most everything else is fairly easy to get.
 
How is the metal? Was it drilled and tapped for a scope in the past?

Because that's the real killer. Missing stocks and bands can be replaced, but if someone cut on the metal it's really not worth bothering unless it's something really rare.
 
Yes glad to hear. Hope the project turns out well. Great to see a rescued 98k brought back to more original.
