EOD - bombs and bullets
Got a call from a buddy asking if I had any interest in a 44 bnz SS Contract, but unfortunately it was only a barreled action with bolt. Well, I've had a nice semi Kriegsmodell (Clay says it a dou, and Clay knows wood, so I believe him, lol) complete set with handguard and bands sitting in the closet for probably 2 years waiting for a potential project, so even though it isn't correct for the gun, I figured why not, I'll have a complete gun until a more appropriate gun or stock comes along (a tough thing these days!)...so we struck a deal...
Good data point for the SS Contract research as far as the metal goes, no help in the stock/trigger guard/bands department.
Large font bnz 44, no final, Mod 98 on sidewall, other than that, nothing...no V7's pretty bare. Barrel has serial (8231) and FP...also a 2 on the top of the shank (which I've seen on other SS Contracts) Barrel band is ch Ad and a WaA, other than that, thats it on the barrel. Rear sight sleeve has a single WaA. Sight leaf has serial, and a WaA. Bolt body is numbered, safety is numbered, other than that, 0 markings on bolt or its components... Sear is late type squared off kind, no markings on it or trigger. Came with the rounded style "Steyr" type hood, which was a genuine two balled bitch to get off and on!
As I said, dropped it into a dou semi kriegs stock set...its been sanded a bit, but not terrible, no markings at all. Bands are stamped and unmarked. I came up with a late stamped trigger guard with no provisions for lock screws, qnw marked...it does have a serial, but oh, well. Floorplate is an E/37 Armorer spare.
Went together well, looks great, and it'll sit nicely next to my 43 all original SS Contract, plus I didn't have a 44 Steyr, do have a 39, a 40, a 41, no 42, 2 43's, and 2 45's...looking at Farb's thread on SS Contracts, it seems to be a pretty late one as serials go, hopefully something useful can come from the data point...
