long long time since I posted and then it was over on the k98k forum. Had a table at the small local annual gunshow a month ago here on the Kenai and a guy brought in a hitler youth rifle and he was directed to my table since I am the local 'mauser' expert. Told all I knew that it was probably 5mm. Said he had two more out in the truck, that his dad who was in the third army artillery with Patton. He brought in a badly duffle cut stock (45 degree) and karab 98b with the barrel twisted 5 degrees off kilter and pipe wrench marks from the dirty deed. Given the damage I was far more interersted in the model 71 (yaeger rifle). It appeared to be correct except the sling swivels were gone. minor scratches from the pipe wrench. He asked me what it was worth ? I told him one in Anchorage gunshows went unsold for $300.00 for several years. I regreted not buying it, but never could get that guy to trade for equal valued rifles. He asked me if I would give $300.00 for the 71 in hand? I looked it over well and said sure. I gave him 3 Franklins and he handed me the 98b said you can have this one too, I don't want to carry it around the show and walked off to sell the hitler youth rifle which he did promptly. I have since secured 38 rounds of 43 mauser brass from a friend and need to find a deal on 11 mm dies and a bullet mold. The karab 98 B is coming together, barrel has been fitted on properly. The m/m straight gew bolt had a the tip of the firing pin delibrately broken off. All other parts match, but it is missing the handguard, follower and spring. Bore is real nice and when I can find a kid with young eyes to volunteer to shoot for accuracy it will be a darn good shooter. I am going to probably mount and unused k98k iron elite scope mount so that I can do it justice.
The local annual gunshow never fails to turn up some interesting firearms and so I rent a table months in advance, fill it with neat guns and always end up buying more than I sell. I suppose I am the only gun collector that ever happens too. : < }
