Stock Pick Up, DRP, Standard or Banner?

EOD - bombs and bullets
Lucked into this stock, saw it pop up, grabbed it real quick, looked good in the pics...figured from the way it looked better grab it.

I think it was a good grab, thing is untouched, unsanded, un-refinished, just a beautiful piece of lumber.

It is a DRP stamped stock...missing bayo lug, but rear spring, recoil lug and butt plate all there, as well as the bayo lug pin...but all are air rusted. But wood is just beautiful, raw inside, and finger grooves sling cuts, bolt cut out are all nice and sharp. Has that one little chip on the bolt cutout...

It looks like this takes a pinned front band, single spring rear band, what is this for, Standard Modell, Banner? Year?

The stamp on the butt has the number 503667, but the stamp in the channel is 53667, fonts are the same, but no "0"...is this normal, or factory error?

I was debating dismounting the metal and working on the rust, but Flynaked says he'd leave it, what say the board?

Like I said, don't need it, but too pretty/nice to pass on, and maybe someday I will (need it that is...)! I think it'll be an awesome stock for some deserving action...Just don't exactly know what it would go on, the non-military 98's are something I know little about...

It would have a BannerK (basically a 98k), the receiver would have been a 1933 and yes the extra zero on the stock would not have been present on the metal or anywhere else on the stock. Not sure why they added the zero initially, but eventually they drop it in the stamp also.

I would leave it alone also, it is good material for trading, but I see no advantage to "fixing" things, some guys like the untouched look.

Nice stocks are always good to pick up if reasonable, they are like wooden cash (worth more that the crap in our pockets, dollars only hold value because all the other currencies/central banks are even worse)

Thanks for the info Paul, its much appreciated.

Yeah, I figure if I don't find a need, its good trade bait...I am sure someone out there needs it!

Greetings all:

I am reviving this thread because I am now the caretaker for the Banner stock in question. I have what I was told is an early 1933 Russian capture Mauser Banner rifle that I'd like to place in this original stock... My RC action is currently mounted in what I have been told is a South American contract stock - it is solid Walnut with the finger grooves and early split lower band spring. My question is about how to go about removing the rusty bayo mount/lug pin in the DRP stock. See the original pictures above. The pin has been in that wood for a long time and I do not know how much or if the corrosion evidenced on the rest of the metal parts associated with the stock might interfere with the pin's removal and the potential to damage the wood. Thoughts & suggestions are most welcomed. Left to my own devices... I would bind up the wood all around the pin to prevent stock wood chipping caused by the pin's movement and see if I could get it to break free. I'm really hesitant to apply chemicals as they would no doubt soak into this very dry and unblemished wood. I know that this area will be underneath metal parts... but I don't want to degrade the wood any more than the steel parts rusting over time and exposure might have already done.

Edit: My rifle serial number (From my database records) is: 1933 Banner SN 50323

Also...

Does anyone have any early Mauser Banner parts? Being a RC... most of the parts I have right now not attached to the barreled receiver are not from a Banner. When i find the rifle I'll take some pictures showing what I'm starting with and the proposed addition of the stock detailed in this thread.

Cheers!

Wally, glad it made it safe and sound...don't know a lot on these Mauser Banner's. but I believe any standard 98k bayo lug will work, but you would want and early one with the scalloped cut outs, in the white...

The pin, I'd start with an appropriate sized punch, and gently tap on both sides and see if it will come out somewhat easy...personally, I wouldn't fret any chipping too much, as once the bayo lug is in place that entire front end will be under the lug, but thats just me..

I am sure guys much more savvy on these will be able to verify about the lug and whatever other different parts you might need, and maybe better advice on the pin removal...I agree though, trying to soak it with kroil or anything will soak into and discolor the wood...

Good luck with the project, and if you need help with posting pics, please let us know, I or someone could help I would think, would love to see the project progress!

I would drill a hole in a piece of hardwood the exact size of the pin, position the stock with the pin on/in the hole and drive the pin out from above.

Thanks! That was exactly the type of suggestion that I was looking for.. I was overthinking the issue of how to support the wood where it contacts the pin on the exit side... this solution seems to resolve that issue.

Best regards,

WallyG.
