What part of the year for an AK block DOT 1944?

Just picked up an all matching untinkered with DOT 1944 in the AK block.

Any idea of what time of year this one would have been produced? Only thing I've found interesting about it is an asterisk just below the waffen on the right side of the receiver. Guessing a previously rejected receive that they pushed through?

Thanks

Wow, had no idea folks have researched down to the month, let alone around the exact day.. Things have gone far since I went on a k98k hiatus! Pretty neat and thanks for the help.

I'll try to get up some pictures this weekend, got lots of work to do so no promises. Pretty nice shape overall, nothing amazing but I'm not complaining.

Thank you again.

Not sure down to the day or even week is an often or accurate occurrence, however several things play including stock date code, barrel lot codes and procedural changes among others. I think the asterisk is usually placed in the area where the previous rejected flaw was corrected. It would be nice to see it when you get a chance.

Well, May 6 was the result, but there is a BIG assumption involved. I took the serial number groups for 1944 (DOT 44 was pretty weird), figured how many rifles were in each group giving me the total for 1944. Then I figured how many rifles were made prior to yours in 1944. That gave me the percentage of the total that had been made prior to yours. I took that percentage times 365, came up with May 6. This is spot on only if they made the same number of rifles every day in 1944. If they built more early in the year then May 6 is late, if they built more late in the year May 6 is early. Best I could come up with.

Vol. 3 gives an estimate of June for the ak-am block rifles. It also gives a margin of error as +/- one month. I think it would be highly unrealistic to attempt to give an exact date of manufacture for a given rifle, barring some physical documentation from the factory regarding a specific s/n. I don't think production was ever entirely consistent from month to month given the various periodic disruptions due to allied bombing, etc..

What is the source for this serial range guide? I would like to use it.

My source is from Vol.3 Kriegsmodell, of the Karabiner 98k series books authored by the creators of this forum. Vol. 3, page 239 in the Brünn I chapter has a chart that gives an estimated period of production for the Brünn I factory s/n blocks of 1944. It is an estimate since no official period documentation has ever been found. It also states the trouble with determining time frames based on irregular production rates, and a fire on November 20, 1944, hence the estimated +/- a month margin of error. Check the Forum sections above for a link to the book series.

Thanks Stan! I should have clarified that I was asking allis49wd, who says he has an internet source. I have the books myself, but haven't gotten that far yet.

Here's those pictures. Didn't have much time to take decent ones sorry.

Google 'K98 dot 44 serials'. One of the sites that comes up is DOT 1944 rifles Late War . com It has the serial ranges in the order they were produced. .

As Sargent Schultz might say, "...dot's a gut one." !!!!!
I have an un-messed with "dot 1944," serial 4237aj, and it could be your rifle's twin.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks as always for the valuable information. I've got the K98k books but since the move they've been wrapped in plastic vacuum bags and boxed up.. Need to get them out!
