Which receiver is considered large ring?

History

Country Boy
My brother just got a 308 barrel and is looking for a reciever to mate it up with. I told him I'd check on here to see if anyone has one. My question here is, which receiver should he get? I know there are 98 receivers where bubba decided to make a deer rifle or the barrel is shot out. I told him to get something in that order so as not to destroy something valuable.

Is a regular k98 receiver considered a large ring? Should I ask here in a wtb ad or is there some place you guys would recommend?

Thanks

Yes the K98 is a large ring Mauser. The Israelis and Norwegians (8mm->30-06->7.62 NATO) both re-barreled captured k98's after the war. Note you can also us a Yugo M48 for a cheaper alternative. A buddy of mine re-barreled a M48 to .308 and kept in the original configuration.

NOTE: you may have to do some fiddling with the mag well as the shorter 308 rounds may shift. Not sure but something to look out for when building.

FYI, the Yugo M48 isn't a true large ring. It's a large ring with an intermediate length action (~1/4" shorter ). Rebarreling a M48 to .308 should be ok, but i'm not 100% if the bolt will need any modifications (I don't think it does).

I actually told him to just get an Israeli 98, I forgot about the Norwegian.

His son bought him a fluted 308 barrel that he didn't really want but his son thought he did. He feels obligated to build it now. I don't guess it matters if it's a Persian, German or whatever. I've Just always thought I would use nothing but a German.

I'll post a wtb in the trader. Thanks for replies.

8mm bolt head works with 308, for the shorter round the mag box needs to be modified, I would just go over to brownells and get a 308 mag & triggerguard.
