This is the * Amberg 1916 that I acquired from Sam in a trade last year. I love this Gewehr, such a fascinating piece. Bolt, rod, and floorplate/follower mismatch, but I added an armourer's floorplate and follower.

Been a busy day with all the posts, a couple hours altogether... good thing its raining.

This is an exceptional rifle, as you well know, but for those that do not, this is an Erfurt built sterngewehr, damn hard to find them with different receiver makers receivers, but in this case this is one of three known with Amberg/16 receivers. The other two are "1" suffix rifles though. Very rare this one, desirable too, - when Sam bought this he knew what he was doing, he took a chance though as the auction pictures really sucked. Looks like a damn nice rifle too, and you take better pictures than Sam does, - better than mine by far too.

Another fine Gewehr Mantis, 1916 rifles are my favorite of the Gewehr 98 rifles. Now I really need to get my rifle posted on here hopefully will have it posted next weekend.

Busy day for sure, Paul. I was actually thinking about waiting because of Wolfgangs great Kar98s, but decided what the hell. I remember one of the other * Ambergs being a postwar rework, is the third one the same?

Looking forward to seeing your Gew, Warrior! 1916 is a good year, right in the midst of major production. Maybe I'll do some year set photos again this summer.

Yes, below are the three I have recorded over the last 10-15 years:

1916 Amberg 760 1 (interwar reworked, bubba-barbarized- trainwreck..)
1916 Amberg 8045 1 (stock sanded badly, someone polished up the receiver etc..)
1916 Amberg 1615 2 (nice)

Of course Erfurt made sterngewehrs using Erfurt marked receivers and Spandau marked also. Amberg's the least.

Would love to find an Erfurt*Amberg rifle over here.
According to Storz, Amberg delivered only 9,200 receivers to Erfurt between April 1916 - Februar 1917.
Only 3,000 Amberg receivers went to Spandau in the same period.

On the RR photo, the left acceptance stamp (Bavarian crown/G) for "Hülse hart" is identical with regular Amberg 1916 production, isn't it.
Do these rifles/receivers show any other Amberg markings on the lower receiver?

PS: please note the underlined crown/N on the RR. Erfurt had two inspectors with their last names beginning with a "N".

Yes, the RR 1st position, the receiver acceptance, is Amberg's, this is so with any rifle that was made-finished by another maker. The 2nd and 3rd are Erfurt acceptance stamps. I am not sure on the second element of your question, not many have been recorded and most do not show the lower receiver markings. I suspect they might have some Amberg markings if we could see the areas, and they fall into the ranges the markings show up.

Wolfgang, unfortunately I did not photograph that area on the *Amberg, but there was nothing there. Next time I get it apart I will take a picture to verify. That's fascinating that Spandau also got some Amberg receivers, has a Spandau assembled Amberg shown up yet?

Here it is with 2750t; I like the comparison between the two 1916 Ambergs.

I have not encountered a Amberg-Spandau, though quite a few pre-war receivers have been recorded cycled through Spandau as sterngewehrs.

Glad to see you got it apart! I didn't want to strip the screw out. My gew 98 game has been slow, only picked up once since the new year. Good to see that 1916 Amberg with the battles carved in the stock again as well. I did pick up a 1914 Mauser pocket pistol with German Army acceptance recently 39,066 probably puts it in 1914 or early 1915.

I've been doing some rearranging and cleaning so I decided to get this one out and finally get a picture of the receiver under the wood. There is a small O beneath the side rail and a K in the front.

Glad to see it turned out clean under the stock, the receiver looks great. I was never able to get that one apart.

It sure wasn't easy to get this one apart, had to use an impacting screw driver on that screw. We were careful and didn't harm the screw itself. Last night was only the second time I had the wood off. That Beech stock is tight, doesn't want to come off easily. This is by far one of my favourite Gews.

Sterngewehrs are pretty interesting, especially odd ones like this, - you do not see many Amberg receivers built up by others.

Good you were able to take it down, study aside I always like too just to make sure everything is good under the stock. I added the characteristics to the study.
