Picked this up as a BIN on gunbroker..It is duffle cut under the middle band and missing a hand guard..I thought it potentially escaped rebuild, but it has plenty of renumbered parts..The bolt body is stamped matching, cocking piece is mismatched, but the rest of the bolt parts including firing pin were renumbered, maybe they missed it...The interesting thing to me are the assembly number (5) marked on the original trigger guard and middle band along with the barrel and receiver..I included the RR and barrel code for Loewe...Thanks for looking...

Thanks RI, I didn't notice a RR?

The Krupp BC is interesting, that and its acceptance suggests it might be a wartime re-barrel, no Krupp blank is known for Amberg before the war, which alone means nothing, but that acceptance is generally not known until 1912. That too can be excused, but i find it strange that it has that early RS base also, - no telling the story with the rifle, but all three suggest this rifle went back to Amberg or a Bavarian depot for a re-barrel. The serialing is very close though, but that could be normal for a rework that went back to Amberg or Ingolstadt (numeric serialing for Amberg is remarkably consistent), unknown, as i have never seen this before, but one thing is for sure, this rifle has some odd things about it.

Neat rifle all the same, 1907 is not normally a low production year for the G98, Mauser & DWM made a lot of rifles that year, so it is a common date seen, but all the arsenals are rather elusive. They were gearing up for the 98a and almost all curtailed G98 production in the process, many stopped it altogether. Which is why MO & DWM took up the slack, - or one assumes... prior to 1906 MO/DWM were small makers, DWM mostly for the KM.

Very nice rifle, question for Lowe I noticed the ops rifles sights go down to 200 yards and on my 1916 Gewehr it only goes down to 400 whats the story behind this?

G, The subject is quite complicated and not everyone agrees, at least to the conversion to the S Patrone, - Gunboards has long had a history of foul tempers on this subject, but the basics were described best (simply) by MauserBill, the below is from about 15 years ago:

Prior to 1904 ( changes initiated in 1903 ) the gew98 rifles were used with patrone 88 ammunition - same cartridge used with the gew88. The Lange Visier sight had a 200 meter battle sight setting up until the introduction of the S patrone in 1903. I have encountered 1903 and earlier gew98's with the 200 sight setting but never a 1904 or later...with the exception of salvaged rifles.
The adoption of the S patrone had the Germans re-equip gew98's in service with new sight leaves and slides , as well the chambers were marked S to show show they were now S patrone compliant when the mods were completed.

In short, an early G98 would have retained this base (with new hardware), a 1907 that has one is not normal and is sign of a salvage.
