I drove an hour and a half to a gun show with the intent to pick up some ammunition... and I walked out with no ammunition, but this rifle. It appears to be import stamped "8 mm" on the barrel, very small stamp. The bolt is mismatched but is a correct bolt and the rest of the rifle is all matching and is in wonderful shape for its age. I paid $450 for it and the seller threw in a Gewehr 98 muzzle cap for free, so that was nice! Was wondering what the experts here thought of it. Thanks!

I'm the opposite of an expert, but I like it. I seem to see more Kar98A in nice shape than Gew98. Anybody else notice this?

The stock is accepted, just not prominent. I think you did fine for $450, it appears to have seen post WWI service.

You might want to turn the lower band around so that the sling opening is on the left. Nice rifle at a great price!

It's a parade rifle. You can tell by the sling stud

If a parade rifle, then does that make it unsafe to shoot? I was about to take it to the range, and I noticed that I cannot see the front sight through the rear notch... the slider is a solid freaking brick... covers up the sight picture. What to do?

The original 98az muzzle cover is different from that of the 98G and an extension slides into a channel milled to the forward side of the front sight base. It doesn't extend over the top. Original muzzle covers for these have been scarce for decades and pricey but perhaps a forum member has an extra one.

Don't think it's a parade rifle, everything looks to be as it should be. Except for the additional numbers on the band and hook it looks also straight imperial. The stock cartouches are faint but definitely there. Also the bluing looks original from th pictures, which is great, postwar bluing is dark and shines, doesn't look right at all. If you take it apart could you take some additional pictures of the markings?

You did well on the price. Normally import marked Kars have other problems, like being seriously mismatched or even incomplete, but this one looks very nice.

Try moving the slider up to a distance setting when you shoot it.

The sling stud is shaped so you can have the rifle on a certain way

What are you referring to when you say sling stud? Are you talking about the stacking hook? Which is to stack multiple rifles together to keep them off the ground. The band is normal just on backwards, the band and the stock are the only sling attachment points on a 98a.

Ghostrider, do you have photos of the buttplate, Cyrus is right, on second look this rifle doesn't exhibit really anything post war. The 4 digit band numbers could have been done during a wartime rework. Normally it would just be two digit, but there were many different levels of reworks and many different ways parts were renumbered. One of the more senior members will have a better idea.

I do have a photo of the buttplate. Incoming.

Also, here are the photos of the muzzle cap device he threw in for free. If it's repro I don't care, if it's real, that's fine too, like I said it was free... it just doesn't fit my Gew 98 or my Kar 98 for some stupid reason.

Any numbers or letters on the buttplate?
