Hi all,
Thought I'd share my purchase. The rifle is marked DOU 44 with numbers matching and original markings. The sling is original as well. The sight hood and cleaning rod however are repros. It is most likely a vet bring back. I'm happy with it :) I have yet to shoot it, but visually, things look great.

Looks to be an unsanded stock too even better. The markings are actually pretty crisp to. Looks to be a nice rifle.

Another pic down the barrel. That's the best I can get the photo, but the rifling looks absolutely great in person.

Your rifle has had the stock replaced.
Take the rifle apart and check the barrel channel.
The stock should not have a Heer acceptance stamp on the stock nor
should it be drilled for a cleaning rod.

Apologize for that I didn't see that in the pictures. Pictures show better detail on my computer then on my phone. If its not the correct stock could have been a sporter rescue many years ago. Or the vet found the rifle with a broken stock and put a different one on it. Taking the rifle apart will tell you all the answers you need.

But there is some good news late war unsanded stocks are worth some money just by their selves.

They certainly are. I've seen them go as high as $300 or so just by themselves depending on who wants it and how badly. Unsanded unmessed with stocks are not so readily available. Some of the prices on Ebay are ridiculous, but if someone really wants it?

Your right late war stocks sets are not cheap. I once saw a really nice unsanded BNZ45 stock set for almost $1000 at the NGD show last year. Someone bought it.

Of course stuff is always priced high there. But there are deals you just have too shake the tree a little and get lucky if something walks through the door.

So how can you guys tell it's a replacement?? What gives it away? And what exactly should I look for if it is original?

I think the days of 'Tommy stocks' for $220-270 complete and matching with all metal are long gone. Unless someone falls on a big pile of them somewhere? I think that ship has long sailed. At one time that was the best you could hope for to make a true stock mis-match. If you got lucky you even got the correct stock/metal from the correct era.

Being drilled for a cleaning rod and stock stamps are what gives it away. I'm agreeing with HM on the 44 Gustloff made stock. Stock looks like it belongs on a bcd4 rifle.

Ah, OK, so DOU 44 rifles should not have a Heer acceptance stamp then? Was this not seen on those rifles made in that factory? Also, is just the fact that it has a cleaning rod indicate it is drilled for one? Did late model K98's not have cleaning rods? Sorry guys, I'm still learning the ropes here :-/

As Bob stated the transition to Kriegsmodell. This late in the war the cleaning rod was done away with and bands would later be held on my wood screws instead of the band spring. Saves on steel, saves on time, and gets it out faster. Gone were the days of quality but the need for quantity.

I think being drilled for a cleaning rod is possible at this point. Certainly later like 'ff' block it's gone almost certainly but at your rifle I don't think that's a red flag on it's own. Other characteristics give it away. Funny how much misinformation is still out there. Earlier tonight I saw another post that identified the factory at 'Banská Bystrica' which is an actual city, but wrong river valley and wrong city. Right country, wrong Bystrcia

Still not a bad rifle IMHO, depending on what you paid.

Not to be a d*uche but it kills me that I keep seeing these mixed up/misrepresented. Považská Bystrica on the Váh river is where the factory actually was. The site is where they moved the old Georg Roth ammo plant from Bratislava. Banská Bystrica is like 80-100 km SE of the actual site. It's a real city but no rifles were assembled here. Sorry if I'm being redundant but I hate that I keep seeing this misinformation put out there.
