Hi - looking at the purchase of this k98 for my first one - there are a few days left on the auction, and after asking this group about a dou44 - they appeared much more common - and started looking around some more - can anyone let me know what they think?

All matching - on everything appears to be the real deal....

I may be able to get it for about $1800 - when compared to others - looked like a good deal - but as I'm still learning - would like the experts opinion - thanks in advance!

Rifle is a real mess with a lot of replaced parts

Really - wow - I'm so glad I have someone looking out for me - what exactly can you discern on this? Seems all correct, but obviously I'm so far from the knowledge I need - thanks in advance!

The stock is completely wrong and sanded, the handguard too, replaced floorplate, wrong front band, and wrong bayo lug, just off the top of my head, there maybe more. I wouldn’t be in a hurry to rush into a rifle, a very high percentage of rifles on broker have issues.

Bolt for one looks totally dinked with... also looks to be a crack spanning across the recoil lug. And I’m pretty sure it shouldn’t be in this Kriegsmodell phase at this point.

To be honest Jim8olot, you seem to be batting a thousand with duds. You might want to avoid Gunbroker and look no further than here on this forum. These guys won’t steer you wrong and BS is called out quickly.

There is a very nice BNZ 43 on the trader now that would be a much better starter rifle than this one, FWIW. As FlyNaked mentioned an overwhelming number of rifles on GunBroker have issues, it is a real minefield for new collectors, things that may look right aren’t, and most sellers on GB are just trying to move things, quickly.

Sure pays to invest in the new books also. As already stated more beginners should keep their eye on the forum here for a much more honest example.

That should not be in a Kriegsmodell stock. At the very least use the picture sticky thread here if you don't want to buy the books.

Yeah, humped up stock is totally wrong as stated. Bolt is good, but the rest of the parts should be numbered.

To the OP:

As an option, I currently have an all matching Gustloff Werke bcd4 (1944) for sale in the forum trader. I just purchased it from a long time member here, so its history is solid. I am selling it to go a different direction in my collecting. It is matching, all original, bore is as new, shiny with sharp and pronounced rifling. It has (from a collectors perspective) some rather desirable characteristics. These include a phosphate finish, and it is from the y-block, basically meaning it was manufactured very, very late in 1944. Just something for you to think about.

Interesting on the bolt! If I recall reading somewhere, Steyr was a bit sloppy. I take it this is an example? The bolt looks to be missing a number at the end.

Good one

Yes...this is a nice rifle and fairly priced.

Around this time frame Steyr was very sloppy early in 1941 not so much. My guess this rifle was a matching barreled action with bolt that someone tried to restore for resale.

It’s actually one of the better examples, they get a whole lot worse

This guy has come up a lot lately, especially over at Dave's site. Recent hardcore flipper wannbe who buys others junk, 'fixes' them and tries to resell them at substantially higher prices but oddly with no mention of the issues. Not well thought of with collectors from what I've observed. Despite many of the droolers giving his fabulous feedback I wouldn't buy oxygen from his personally.

Look at his buying/selling. Bet that recent purchase from SouthernTactical shows up sooner rather than later but now magically delicious. FWIW that was cuz from Clinton.MS here when he got called out as a humper. "He doesn't 'hump' rifles, he fixes them"
