Hi Jake,
To start it looks like (as you probably already know) an Imperial era Kar98. More pictures would be needed to identify more.
It looks like the Handguard is missing and extra finger grooves cut into the wood. More pictures of the stock should tell us more.
If my eyes arent playing tricks, i see an E towards the top of the receiver. Most likely indicating an Erfurt made Kar98
 
Thanks for the quick turnaround, I am glad to share more pics. Curious to know what year and where it was manufactured. Apparently it has been modified

Yup the this was for sure an Erfurt Kar98. The date cannot be read anymore.
It has been heavily sporterized, and tampered with.
The stock has been cutdown, and had grooves cut into it. the rear sight removed, and heavily scraped, ground receiver.
 
with the serial number can you approx the manufacturing date?
After the war soldiers had to return them and folks messed with them Kar in order to keep them as hunting rifle
 
finding a date with serial number is tough.
Serial numbers usually range from 1-9999, then to 1-9999a then 1-9999b and so on. We call these letter blocks.
Unfortunately, these letter blocks reset after the year back to no letter block.

(anyone can correct me if i missed this up)

should be WWI correct?
 
Is it worth trying to look for parts and rebuild or is it too much in a bad shape?
I see some Kar98 at the GB.com going for $650 to 900 and up of course. so I guess better find a decent one at the GB
 
This one looks really beat up unfortunately, and parts aren't easy to come by,and are more expensive.
In the end it would be cheaper to buy a correct new one.
and dont mention the expertise thing ;)
There are people here with wayy wayyyyyy more knowledge than me, im just a rookie!

1 -10000, 1a-10000a, etc,
