Gewehr 98 Amberg 1912 5578

My first Gewehr 98 of 2022. This was a very lucky find on Gun Broker. Fortunately a good friend found it and sent it to me. There was a Buy It Now low enough that it would not have lasted long.

It came in great shape and original, albeit dirty. Whoever shot it last neglected to clean it. The follower and floorplate were mismatched, and the striker assembly was cobbled together. I put in an armorers floorplate and follower, but need to find an armorers shroud, safety, and cocking piece. The screws are unnumbered, which is odd, and the disc was flipped to the cleaner side. Perhaps work of a prior collector. I did flip the disc, preferring the side with acceptance even if it’s rough.

Disassembly wasn’t difficult with an impacting screw driver. The dirt cleaned off easily with Ballistol. I used bronze wool on some of it, but mostly smothered the parts in Ballistol then used a toothpick to scrape off the congealed dirt. The results speak for themselves.

I’m very glad to be able to dissect an early Amberg. The barrel has the double lot number, like on a couple other prewar Ambergs. The major parts almost all have an assembly number: 1. The rear sight leaf and slider are mated with the number 55. I suspect the bands and rear spring may have been supplied by WMO, and the trigger, the acceptance doesn’t look Amberg. Rest of the acceptance is text book Amberg: c/R, c/J, c/G.

Undoubtedly it is a rare year (and a year I didn’t have, so that’s nice) but I have seen a couple over Amberg 1912s. I don’t think either had original stocks, so it’s great to see the acceptance on this one. This one went through Amberg for the stock repair, you can see the double wrist acceptance. The c/J was probably first, then c/G for repair. The stock was patched but the handguard replaced, the replacement has the serial penciled it.

Congratulations on that find. Nice early gun. The wood repair is a cool feature. What is the earliest year Gew98 that you have acquired ?
Having only a handful of imperial rifles myself, I’m just curious how many real early rifles are known here on the forum.

Thanks! My earliest is a 1901 Spandau, but there are a few pretty early ones among the forum members here.

It's an understatement no matter how I say it cyrus, this is a phenomenal piece, both in rarity and condition. I can think of no one better to have landed with it either, as I know this was one of your dream rifles.

I'm sure Paul can expound further, but 1912 is extremely seldom seen in this kind of condition, it goes even more so for a Bavarian rifle. Congratulations man!

That’s so interesting. Thank you for the link. My collection has focused on a decent example of each model Mauser produced for the German military through the ages, not so much all years/makers. It had dawned on me most of the Gew’s you see are 1914-17 seldom earlier. With the rate of attrition, the survival of the earlier guns must have been quit low. I appreciate it.

That's definitely a cool one there Cyprus really hard to find an early bavarian made rifle. And I think the earliest Gewehrs I own are the 1902 DWM and the 1914 dated pieces.

I never noted assembly numbers on early Amberg's, but I will check on the possibility of finding others tomorrow... also will check on trends for Amberg/12, but probably low. Pre-war Ambergs are pretty scarce in upper grades especially, - though some super original pre-wars are known, which amazes me really, though you need to be careful in Europe as I have seen several frauds altered to look early. Haven't seen this so much here, but it seems American forgers are poorly skilled or too lazy to make a good effort. but the French and Germans will go the extra mile, maybe related to a residual machinist profession lingering in western Europe (where as in America we specialize in printing money to pay others- the last of the lingering "benefits" of World War Two (Betton woods) whose legacy is fast coming to an end, the advent of actual democracy is quickly eroding the control on American world dominace through the printing press...

Great beginning to 2022 Cyprus. You don't see many rifles dated 1912 especially from Amberg. I saw a 1912 dated Amberg about two years ago on GunBroker.

Amberg:

1902-1908 G98 production, generally a-b blocks but some more, rarest years 1902 & 1908 (1902 one known & confirmed; 1908 6 documented, plus a few reports, very rare w/ original stocks, but two are unit marked, high 678/a)

1912 restarts G98 production at Amberg (the end of 98a production), 8 are known, plus two reports, two have original stocks (including this one), no unit marked. (3042/a high)

Really pre-war are very tough, Amberg carries the additional burden of low yearly production which probably rivals any of the others, though consecutive serialing among the Prussian arsenal skew the estimates...

**Assembly numbers I noted two other in a quickie search, one a 1907 with the same "1", same location on the receiver, barrel not shown, also KenL Amberg has two "5" in this manner but is a upgraded rifle, and the relationship is clouded. WIll need to do a formal search for others. but I suspect this will follow a similar path DWM took.

Thanks for the observations, Paul. (I saved the photos of that 1902 Amberg when it was on gun broker. Only Amberg I’d seen with the 200m sight base. Wish I was able to snag it.)

It’s always good to find prewar examples with original stocks and barrels. Interesting that this one was reworked at Amberg, but the work seems to have been limited to the stock channel wood repair and handguard replacement. The barrel bands I thought were replacements, with the c/W acceptance, so the assembly numbers were helpful in determining their originality. You’re probably right about DWM, I need to dissect more DWMs to be certain but I don’t think I’ve seen them with assembly numbers on the bands, usually only receiver, Barrel, triggerguard.
