Gewehr 98 Amberg 1912 5578

That Amberg/02 was something, it didn't surprise Wolfgang, but it amazed me because no reference to one had existed and not even a report (which even among pre-war WMO exist for every year but are probably bogus.. or rather mistaken or misreported...)

As I recall it was a nice example too, but there are few "common" pre-war maker-dates, maybe WMO-DWM 1906-1907'ish as they really made a lot for a couple of years when the arsenals were engaged in Kar98a production.

Really the combination of condition here along with rather low production make this a rather rare rifle. Pre-war Amberg is not necessarily rare, but certain years are, especially with original stocks (and bolts).

autocorrect and use of small devices (fat fingers) really amplify the curse of silly errors (especially when we are dealing with foreign words or obscure or specialized fields with a lot of slang or technical terminology)

Also, found a cheap lid for this one, lucked out on a poorly described BiN, and already had a good bayonet for it. They all make a great set!

The MC looks like a Vollmer (sp?) made, think this is one of his as it carries his trademark, he had a factory at Bilberach (sp?); best known for MP development, but in WWI made lids and such... they are common on 98a lids.

Perfect match getting a VCS or CGH S98, as I recall they carried the Bavarian contract.

Vollmer, thats the name, thanks Paul! It came up before, i have another cover with the logo on the front, but i couldn't find the thread.

Yeah, they are usually marked on cover, this maybe the first I have seen under but most do not show this underside... I will post a blurb from SG regarding this activity...
