1918 DWM "b" Block

Hi All,

I had a little time this week to try out a new photo set-up and thought I'd start by posting one I bought a couple years ago, but haven't done a photo spread on.

I got this rifle from CLG here on the forum and it was part of a group of rifles I purchased from him. This rifle is a real peach all the way around and I'm proud to have it. I put a really nice ersatz/canvas sling from Mike on it and it really went well.

The rifle has all that you'd expect from a 1918; Beech stock with a Kroneol finish and clearly saw little, if any action. The only real negative is a goofy repaired duffel cut in between the front and rear band.

Thanks Nick-- on its own it's a great looking Gew98, but when you combine the maker/date, it's something really special. I'm humbled to have it.

Nice Chris! The new set up you are using certainly gives a much better feel to the viewer. Many of your pieces are so nice, your previous method tended to obscure their fine condition. The rifle itself is super!

Holy smokes. This rifle, due to condition/maker/date, is really top tier. Wonderful rifle Chris. I’d love to have any 1918 in this condition one day.

Fabulous rifle,, exceedingly rare in this condition, - the b-block is the last block where "Imperial" rifles number at all,, - whilst DWM/18 went to the e-block in 1918, all or almost all after the b-block are upgrades, BS, property marked or show rearmament (late 1935-1936 or after) work (and or S28 characteristics); still the number of DWM/18 in this condition are exceedingly rare, even moreso than "Imperial" G98's in general. Only WMO and Amberg made a lot (relativily) and the only "common"1918 is Amberg of course (mostly due too Bavarian government obstinacy and the EWB character, the founder's nationalism and toying with an Austrian union - as Bismarck once said a Bavarian is a mix of a man and an Austrian, and things might have been better if Bavaria had united with Austria and St. Germain been less severe)

Thanks Paul, it's my only matching 18, so I'm glad it's a special one. I generally try to yield anything 1918 to Sam as that's one of his areas of focus.

1918 is a really difficult year to focus on, especially in original Imperial state, only Amberg gives many options, - all worthy in their own right too and could occupy a wallet (budget) all by itself...

** if I had it all to do again, I probably would have narrowed it latewar (1917-1918) and through 1932 with some latitude to stretch into pre-rearmament (1935-1936) void of wartime ordnance work ; which would have had few competitors, other than the 98b crowd (even in the late 80's and 1990's these had a small and competent collector base)

My biggest issue is that I enjoy it all in German small arms. I'm cursed with a wide interest and the persistence to work my butt off to get deep in each area.
