Came across this g98 , its not bought yet but im really thinking about it . Worth a shot of restoring/cleaning ? 1917 Dwm beech stock wich look at least cleaned if not sanded . Cartouche still clear , all matching numbers . However metal surface isn’t the best :(, what you guy’s think about it ?

I don't think sanded, maybe lightly cleaned. Later stocks were fairly light if finished in train oil, which this seems to be.

It's a nice, albeit salty rifle. I'd own it if the price was right.

Biggest mistake people make with Gew98s is that they judge them by k98k condition standards. These rifles did not live an easy life. Adjust expectations accordingly.

Yeah that’s exactly the problem i am in right now , i collect k98’s and DDR/czech ones wich are usually in minty or very good shape . I need at least one g98 in my collection and been looking at them for a while but the conclusion is they are all well used with stock cracks , pitting and bunch if other issues . this one caught my eye well because its fully matching and i like the later war design with td disc and grooves . I wasn’t sure if it would be worth it but i think i will give it a go man ! Thank you for clearing things out Chris !

I agree, it looks original, had a few pictures of it from 2021 but they look similar so probably same source. Stock and barrel are factory, bolt probably as well, the f-block of 1917 is when things changed regarding stock configurations, this is actually the first apparent factory use of takedown and grips together (change in the "B" indicator in a d-e block change, so change is expected for such a range as nothing is done systematically in one cutoff) , prior to this are rarely seen separately, rarely still together. Really this stock configuration is not common until much later in 1917, but acceptance says its good (factory) and sporadic usage of these features are seen after the f-block.

Beech stocks are often hard to read from pictures, you need to feel the wood in many cases... I agree this would be a worthwhile pick-up if the price is reasonable. DWM's are always worth a stretch when this original. (really any 1915-1918 if "IMPERIAL" original, condition secondary,, mismatchers are where caution is important, other than bolt mismatchers or something really special, probably best to pass a questionable rifle unless its parts and price justify consideration.)

Where you saw pictures of it ? I am actually in Canada and here g98 are harder to get than k98 . Been looking for a decent one for a while now and this one seems the best exemple regarding numbers matching and rare features . Got pictures of every parts and everything is matching . Guy told me bore has slight pitting but strong rifling with some shine . I can get it for 1500$ less than what other g98 in the area are posted for and not really in better shape . Plenty of them bc have sanded walnut stock , this one i can’t say for sure but it looks original . I will buy it and see

That's actually fairly decent condition for Gewehr 98. Id buy it and leave it as is other than oil metal. Stock is original.
Well all of you guy’s made me bought it lol my first g98 i think people were too much looking on the condition side like mint k98 so many passed on it but actually its a nice piece !

Glad you bought it-- My collection is broad within German small arms, but Gew98s are my deepest area. I bought my first many years ago at a local shop. They have multiplied like rabbits since. 🤣

Well if this is the case , i am fucked 😅 they sell for higher price than k98’s but i have 1 or 2 in sight 😂😂

Are you in Canada? From what I see in the US, a common matching k98k outsells a matching suhler/other rare Gew98 maker.
Yes i am in canada 🙄 live right now there is 3 or 4 g98 posted at 3500$ In not much better condition than this one , while we are still able to pick « Some « basic matching 98 around 2500-3000 when they pop up

3,500 Maple dollars or USD? Just curious

That's a good price on the one you just got. Solid buy and I would have bought it too had I seen it.

There's a wide radius on these pricewise, though they've crept up.condition certainly helps (pretty ones generally are worth a premium due to scarcity) The rarer makers or prewar examples in original trim are certainly worth more. WOKs seem to carry a premium, though their rareness gets a bit overstated. Navy rifles and odd stuff like Württemberg rifles also bear a higher pricepoint. Some accessories (Dustcover, extended mag, radium sights) can add as much as $1000 to the price-- each)

In any case, always happy to vet one for you if you find it. Just PM me.

Congrats again!

Those accessories are worth $1k each, if real (repros exist) -- if the base rifle is m/m though that hits value. In my opinion.

1917 DWM 2232 f

Source unrecorded, when saved would depend on a review of my main pc. Looks like the same pictures you have, but more of them?
