Erfurt Model 71/84

Met up with Chrisftk at the Baltimore show this past weekend, had a great time finally putting a face to a forum name and ended up coming home with my first foray into 19th century German Army rifles. To be clear there was a lot of peer pressure involved, I've heard this happens a lot with him.... I knew little on these but the price seemed right and figured it was a good place to start. It is mostly matching, the bands are not matching, the cocking piece on the bolt and one of the TG screws. Stock proofs and markings are really clear and nice, buttplate is marked with a depot stamp for Koblenz so it looks to be a WWI used rifle. If my understanding is correct of the depot style work seems a pretty good chance the bands were probably swapped during that time? Buttplate is also marked to the 138th Infantry Ersatz battalion which also seems to support the wartime issue, I think most of these went to Reserve and Ersatz units. Keel of the rifle has a serial number stamp as does the inside. Not a perfect rifle but Erfurts seem to be less common with these and had most of the things I was looking for in one. Rifle was super dirty inside, I got it out of the stock and cleaned most of the caked on gunk, I've still got work on the bore but maybe next weekend. Getting it out of the wood actually turned out pretty interesting to see the inside mechanics, they are like a clock inside.

And a few more of the inside and bolt, forgot to mention the cutoff lever was broken at the base, it was not number matching so was replaced at some point. I found an orginal replacement on Gunbroker to use, an unfortunate surprise but should be able to get it back functioning properly and looking right.

That is a wonderful Erfurt 71/84. Plus it doesn't help I'm a big Erfurt fan too!

I will say this locating one for sale made by Erfurt is not easy either. Pretty scarce to be honest. Still, I really do love the look of this rifle. Has the right amount of carry wear, but still has the beauty of those early Mausers. Just a nice rifle. And thank you for the wonderful pictures as well.

Lol, I will own up to it. I'm a terrible influence. It was nice walking the show with you though.

Glad you listened to reason on this one Nick. A great first 71/84 with WW1 use. The scarce maker is just icing on the cake. It also cleaned up really nicely from when I last saw it.

I've got a couple of these reworked at Mainz, but this is the first Koblenz 71/84 I've handled. Thanks for the great pics-- and for saving me from buying it myself! 🤣

I am a fan of the used but not abused look this one has. It's nice to see you got quite the score with a unit marked Erfurt 71/84 as your first! Positive peer pressure is a good thing!

Thanks guys, pretty happy with it, unfortunately it's probably creating a whole new rabbit hole to go down in collecting, lol, now I need to find a nice Commission rifle to go with it!
