Cleaning kit.

I bought this several years ago and know basically nothing of cleaning kits. Seems I am incapable of taking clear close-ups, but the can, chain, and oiler are marked G Apel 1937. Thoughts on this one?

Are all the different parts marked/dated? I am not sure about this kit but I have a K98 cleaning kit that has date/maker mark on the can, oiler, spoon, and chain. You have something that is not common or at least something I have not run across. How much was it, if you don't mind me asking? I don't even know what they would go for.

The chain, can, and oiler are stamped G Apel 1937. I don't remember when I bought it, but within the last 15 years, maybe a little less than $200 at the time.

Thank you. I've not seen another. Jon Speed shows one but it,s for a KKW . Do you have one or have seen others? I wonder if there were other manufacturers?

There are at least a dozen manufacturers. Don't believe this is for the smallbores, though. Not surprised that they have gone up so in price; used to be plentiful at around $20 or so. Early ones had manufacturer's name and later on they were marked with alpha-numeric codes (such as "cnx") or unmarked.

Sorry, I should have asked if there were other manufacturers of the smallbore cleaning kits.

If it is a regular K98 cleaning kit then it should have a spoon and I bought my last one for $75.00. Others told me that they can even go for less. I included a picture of a complete kit. If it is a 22 cal. Kit then there wouldn't be a need for the spoon. Can you check the chain out and see if it fits into a 22 cal bore?

.22 caliber cleaning kits were only made by G. Appel. No other maker of the RG34 is known to have produced smallbore cleaning kits. Your 1937 dated RG34 with no spoon is correct for cal. .22 RG34.
The chain looks correct with the weight.
The cal. .22 cleaning kits were used for the sub caliber device, small bore rifles and booty rifles with smaller cal. than 8mm.

Yes, it is a 22cal chain. Jon Speed shows one for the later KKW, but I don't see any mentioned for the more date approprate DSM . Thanks Amberg', I hadn't thought of use in the subcaliber conversion units.

Another view of the smallbore chain...

In reality there are only six or perhaps seven firms that manufactured the rg34 cleaning kits. These would be the prime contractors that produced complete kits. Several additional companies produced individual components (chains, oilers, etc) only. The number of prime contractors may even be smaller as research is ongoing which may confirm and identify makers using multiple abbreviated names and/or codes.

As Amberg correctly stated G. Appel, Berlin-Spandau (a prime contractor) is the only firm which manufactured the smaller 5.56 caliber rg34 cleaning kits.
