1871 carbine

Very happy to finally pick up this rifle. I have had a couple of very worn, rusty examples but now I finally have one for my collection.

Carbine has little wear, and a very very good bore.

Apart from the extractor, every part matches....

I am unable to take the carbine apart for a clean as the screw (pictured) is stuck fast. The head will have fused to the lug. The lug is likely to damage the stock if forced too hard.

All screws are in excellent condition, apart from this one that was quite chewed up from others unsuccessful attempts at removing it. I reshaped and smoothed the head, soaked in penetrating oil but it still wouldn't budge.

Here are a few pictures:

I added it to CB's study, a nice pick up, - and for our purposes at least we do not need to disassemble them.

Try using a soldering iron or something that won't hurt the wood to heat the screw before trying to remove it. It was a tip given to me by an old gunsmith, worked when I tried it on some pretty rust Commission 88's from OWS.

Thanks guys,

I soaked the lug with penetrating oil for three days (making sure not to let it soak into the stock), reshaped the head and tapped all around the lug and head. That would normally be enough to free any part that would free up. No luck moving the screw either way.

Haven't tried the soldering iron trick yet, but thanks for the tip. I may try it, but for now I am going to leave the rifle as is.

I removed the nose cap and barrel band and spread the stock a little. It is dusty, crusty and a bit rusty, so I ran some oil down the outside of the barrel

Hello,

yes. It's the "5. Chevaulegers-Regiment „Erzherzog Friedrich von Österreich“ founded in 1776.

With kind regards
