1896 Gew 91

Gew 98

Well-known member
Hi all,
New member here, I've used gunboards extensively for the last several years but I thought I would try a different forum that is more focused on the area of my collection. So I thought for my first post I would share my Gew 91 I picked up last year, it's more if a representative example but with how rare these carbines are you can't be too picky lol. Its a stock mismatch that's been moderately sanded and stained but cartouches are still visible, all metal matching and bore is in decent shape considering for a 100+ year old rifle. Interestingly there is no unit markings anywhere on the rifle, I was pretty glad to pick this rifle up since I was missing one in my collection for sometime! Now I only need a 71/84 and a Kar98a or maybe a colonial gewehr if you could ever find one!

Welcome to the light side. Gunboards is sadly a shell of its former self.

That's a nice looking Erfurt. These are pretty uncommon and were primarily for foot artillery units (though bicyclists and a few technical troops also have been known to have them) Being non-unit marked occurs sometimes with these- one of mine is too.

Thanks for the warm welcome Chris, I'm a relatively new collector( I've only been collecting for about 4 years). So I never really got to see the heyday of gunboards but even more so recently it has really slowed down. I really liked this example being a 1896, I've only seem them in the early 1890s. I also didn't know that sometimes they weren't unit marked... you learn something new everyday!

Yes welcome to the light side over here we have cookies all the time. Haha. I do have to agree with Chris. Gunboards is a shadow of its former glory. Great looking Gew 91. Makes me wish I never would have sold mine. I need to go on the hunt for a new one now. Also there is not many Colonial Gewehr 98's in the USA maybe like 10 or so. Worldwide there's probably less then a thousand left.

Glad you made it over here. We have a robust reference section too for you to peruse.

These were actually made from Kar88 receivers and they restamped "Gew91" after scrubbing it. You can sometimes see remnants of the Kar88 side rail marking on these.

One of mine is a 96 too, this one has a foot artillery marking on the side rail. (much, much rougher than yours conditionwise)My minty one is a 93.

Looking forward to seeing you around.

Thanks for the welcome! I mean if you guys have cookies then I definitely made the right choice coming to this forum! Lol. Yeah it definitely seems gunboards has been going off the deep end plus with some of the issues that happens over there as well lol. I do see nice Gew 91s pop up every now and then I'm sure you'll get a nice one! I kinda figured that I wouldn't get a colonial gewehr any time soon, but I always found them and their history interesting even the Kar 98 trials carbines are way cool and odd but again I don't think I'll ever find one or afford one! Haha.
