Hi all,

I was fortunate enough to assume responsibility for number of rifles thanks to Mike. I thought I would share one that has not been previously documented here.

This one just spoke to me when I saw it---- It's certainly the "ugly duckling" out of my recent batch, but don't let that detract from it in any way. It's got that untouched an salty look I love to see in a Gew 98. We all love pretty ones, but this one is a witness. It also helped that is was a relatively hard year to find in collectible condition.

The rifle matches except for the rear sight leaf and slider and the hand guard. Floorplate is armorer and seems never to have been numbered to match. It passed twice through Rastatt, where the rear sight likely was likely replaced. There is the front half of a sliding dust cover still on the rifle-- It's pretty snug, so I did not chance damaging it to disassemble the rifle-- There is also an original, but broken sling.

The unit marking is to the Royal Prussian Jägerbattalion No.4, garrisoned in Magdeburg

Great acquisition Chris. Bolt cover looks like it has been there since day one. Would have loved to get to the SOS but had to drive to Fl and move my dad to a different residence.
Did they have any WW1 sniper scopes?
Congratulations!

Thanks!

Hope you can make it next year Rick. I'd love to meet you.

I was scouring the floor for some WW1 optics, but pickings we're slim. Most likely Tulsa would be a better venue.

Fantastic rifle Chris. I know you told me about this rifle a couple days ago. I've been waiting patiently to see more photos of this rifle. The weight was differently worth it.

Very nice! There have been some fine Gew 98's posted this past week here.
Another fantastic rifle Chris. Like you said, this one was in it. I’m excited to see what else you post!

Thanks guys! I was honored to have it join my humble herd.

As someone with great interest in royal prussian jäger units it is really nice to see such a unit marking. Thank you for sharing your rifle with us.
