1916 Spandau Gewehr 98

Hey Guys!
Sharing with you one of the guns from our collection. Its a matching numbers 1916 Spandau Gewehr 98. The bore is about a 7/10 with a 1 inch spot of pitting in the middle but it still shoots very good. We picked this up for $750 AUD. We also purchased a mint 1918 Kar98az that ill post on here soon. tell me what you guys think!

Assembled in Erfurt. Very nice find!

I agree, an Erfurt sterngewehr, - do some pictures of the stock acceptance? Wrist, right side and lower acceptance.

Excellent find! These Erfurt sterngewehrs built on non-Erfurt receivers are interesting and some of my favorite rifles.

Spandau made a lot of receivers, starting in 1916 they even had sub-contractors making receivers for them, marked with Spandau/date, the only way to distinguished them is the sub-contractor marking on the bottom of the receiver and the first acceptance on the right receiver, - otherwise they are identical.

Many of these receivers ended up at other factories, in 1917 this was especially common, Dresden, Erfurt received the most early on, later Danzig and Mauser would get some they incorporated in their production. In 1917-18 Hannover would take a large allotment of receivers and build them up. These all have distinctive markings and acceptance, - your rifle has the star that Erfurt used (all are slightly different) and the right receiver acceptance (last two) are Erfurt inspectors.

That is the short of it, but there is more to the story.

They are scarce, I've owned a few over the last couple of years. Hard to find matching and original. Seen my fair share of hacked up examples, bubba only wanted the best for his high speed deer rig.

Out of curiousity, whereabouts did you find these two rifles in Australia? I have trouble trying to find such buys.

Hey tones, pure luck we found these. A guy was selling this and the kar98az on used guns at the same time and we managed to get them both for a good price
