1917 Danzig/Goerz Model M Semi-Turret

Hi All,

I came across a 2nd cc block sniper in as many months-- maybe i need to start playing the lottery.. This one came up locally at auction and I had a chance to handle it before bidding. While I am by no means an expert, I didn't have any concerns. It ended up going relatively cheap (the benefit of no online bidding)

The rifle itself matches down to the cleaning rod and appears not to have the original scope based on the serial (though i may be wrong). Glasvisier marked rear sight. The metal seems to have a coating on it, but it may just be oxidation. The stock seems to have a Kroneol finish like some of my other 17/18 rifles. A veteran or prior owner has carved initials in the stock. The barrel code is plainly visible above the wood line- gotta love Danzig quality!

I've always enjoyed these Goerz models and find the semi-turret design interesting. The optics are clear and still quite serviceable.

In any case here is the data, thanks for looking---and thanks to Sam for being my second set of eyes!

Thanks Wolfgang- I appreciate it as always.

The other two in the photo were also for sale today. They both went much higher than I thought was sensible to pay given the issues with each.

Back in 2013, the owner had another interesting Danzig 1917 sniper with claw mounts at his display. Serial 4606hh, with mismatched OIGEE scope.

The Oberspree Sterngewehr did not have the front night sight back then. Only the rear sight and the dust cover.

Attached my one and only period photo showing the semi turret.

Interesting-- the other Danzig was not at the sale. Maybe the owner sold that prior. There were a few other Gew98s, two nice interwar kar98a rebuilds and a hodgepodge of other German rifles/pistols.

That is a VERY cool picture-- thanks for sharing.

That is an astonishing nice Gew98 sniper rifle, big thanks for sharing it with us here! I checked my four ST scopes, neither of them is matching to your rifle (not even one in the same letter block!), but already a scope mismatching sample of this variant is an unicorn and not likely to be upgradeable.

Shortly after the 2013 show I traded the owner (Jerry) a front night site for some extra G98 rods he had. I'm surprised these all came available. As I recall he was going through a divorce in 2015.

That's interesting Mike, it looks like he liquidated a lot or it was his estate sale (sad to think that) based on the number of things at the sale. Prices ranged from silly high to quite cheap (this rifle being the latter).

Hey Chris, I was at the same auction haha. So you were the one who bought that sniper. We talked for a minute or two I believe. Congrats, I had no idea if those two snipers were genuine so I didn't touch them. Congratulations, it was a nice rifle!

Thanks Sam, yeah it was an odd auction for sure price wise. I ended up getting the 15 JPS and one of the 98a too. Did you buy anything?

The other sniper was a put-together, but this one was right as rain. I'm sure I'll see you at the next one.

I ended up getting the Commonwealth capture k98, which is what I came for. I also snagged the nice 1871/84 Jager model for a nice price. I was surprised by how cheap some of the other rifles went for too.

That's funny, me buying the sniper caused me to not go for the Brit capture k98k. That 71/84 was rock solid. You got a great price on it too.

I tried for the WOK stern too, but pulled the chute at 3400. Too much.

Well, I'm glad everything worked out haha! That phone bidder really drove up the bid on the k98 and would just not give up!

I was interested in the Kornbusch as well but accidentally missed it as I went to visit the Gettysburg battlefield. I didn't think it would go for that much!

I was very surprised by how cheaply the other matching k98's went for

Chris, would you mind letting me know how much you paid for that rifle? If you do not want to post, maybe via PM?

That was a "restored" Mauser 1917 n-block sniper. The Hahn3x scope on that rifle is great. A very rare variation.
On retrospect, "put together" was probably too harsh a term. Restored is more appropriate given that they tried to keep it correct. Cyrus, Sam and I were discussing prior to the auction.

I did like the scope, that was interesting. I bid on that one too, but dropped off after it crossed my comfort level given the mismatch bolt ,etc... The Goerz was more my target and it was up after the WMO.
