1917 JPS SN 7710k

About 5-6 years ago, I bought a nice duffle cut, bolt and ejector box m/m 1917 JP Sauer Gew 98 for a rather nominal price. It was a cool rifle aside from the couple of m/m parts. I believe I posted it on gun boards at the time.

Fast forward to 2020 and I'm talking to Cyrus about a few things and this rifle comes up. Cyrus tells me the SN looks familiar and sends me a pic of a depot bolt he had with the correct SN. Not only that, but the patina matched perfectly. Given the m/m ejector box, there's a real chance this rifle passed through a depot and this may be "the" bolt. As with typical depot bolts, only the body was renumbered. Maybe just coincidence, but cool to hope it's a reunion of sorts.

Being the good guy he is, Cyrus traded me for another bolt and the 1917 Sauer just got a lot better

Anyone have ejector box #10??

Since I haven't shared this here I've included data and a quick photo spread of acceptance and the BC. The rifle just has a nice look to it. The stock is unsanded, but the cartouches just don't hold up well on beech. The metal was covered in a layer of gunk and rust that came off with a conservative brass cleaning.

What an amazing set of circumstances, - imagine the odds that this would come about form a common conversation between friends!

I agree the bolt looks perfect and the odds this is authentic are far greater than against, though the "how" would be the greater story...

Been away today, but I look for when I trend it and see if anything stands out. Just a wonderful story!

Thanks Paul, it's reasons like this I'm glad the imperial group is so close-knit.

I should probably go buy a lotto ticket after that.

So glad to see it in the Sauer! It looks awesome, further proof that it belongs there.

This really was amazing. I’ve always hoped to unite a Gew and bolt, but honestly thought it was pretty unlikely. Goes to show the value of a solid network and good friends.

In the 20 years since I became an "Imperialist", I have never seen this occur, certainly nothing that I feel is as genuine as this seems. This may have occurred in bnz/45 or some similar circumstances, where groups of rifles were taken at factories and later dispersed bolts find their way back, but this seems far more rare.

It sure does fit the rifle perfectly in fonts, expectations (what would be proper) and patina or appearance.

Of all the disappointing fates of original rifles, it is great to see a positive collaboration to save one!
