Howdy Pisgah, , bruce ryan e, hambone and other k98 wizards.
a few questions about an early k98k I looked at this weekend.
this was for sale by a very knowledgeable (think military surplus rifle guru) pre war k98k with m/m 243 bayonet @ $700.00
All matching metal but the extractor. metal and bore in pristine condition, sadly the stock has been sanded. I am not certain that the walnut stock is matching, certainly pre war -had no time to take it apart. There was only one cartouche on the buttstock, a larger than normal eagle with swastika. No H mark.???? There was no waffenampt on the stock cross bolt. The bolt disassembly 'doughnut' waffenampt was slightly corroded, and I couldn't read the numbers without putting a magnifying glass on it. I have known the fellow selling it is stand up, no fakery involved. He bought all his stuff as a kid and young man in the 50's and 60's, he doesn't have to fake stuff. he says he doesn't know if the stock is matching or not, having never taking it out of the wood.
Is there a sticky somewhere with K98k stock cartouches that I can look at.
I have to drive all the way up to anchorage on soon to be winter road conditions to get to take it out of the stock.
Intuitively I believe the stock to be matching. Frankly this guy would have sold off m/m a long time ago. I would really appreciate it if someone can lead me to a 'sticky' somewhere that will better educate me before I go look it over again.
thanks
