a few questions about an early k98k I looked at this weekend.
this was for sale by a very knowledgeable (think military surplus rifle guru) pre war k98k with m/m 243 bayonet @ $700.00
All matching metal but the extractor. metal and bore in pristine condition, sadly the stock has been sanded. I am not certain that the walnut stock is matching, certainly pre war -had no time to take it apart. There was only one cartouche on the buttstock, a larger than normal eagle with swastika. No H mark.???? There was no waffenampt on the stock cross bolt. The bolt disassembly 'doughnut' waffenampt was slightly corroded, and I couldn't read the numbers without putting a magnifying glass on it. I have known the fellow selling it is stand up, no fakery involved. He bought all his stuff as a kid and young man in the 50's and 60's, he doesn't have to fake stuff. he says he doesn't know if the stock is matching or not, having never taking it out of the wood.
Is there a sticky somewhere with K98k stock cartouches that I can look at.
I have to drive all the way up to anchorage on soon to be winter road conditions to get to take it out of the stock.
Intuitively I believe the stock to be matching. Frankly this guy would have sold off m/m a long time ago. I would really appreciate it if someone can lead me to a 'sticky' somewhere that will better educate me before I go look it over again.
thanks

Without pictures its hard to say much really. Stock doesn't sound encouraging from your description. Fraud artists like stamping giant honking eagles on things.

Take a look at the 37 and 39 dated examples picture reference forum. Short of buying Volume I, its the best way to judge what you are looking at.

thanks guys

I know and trust the guy whose rifle is for sale. He worked at Interarms as a kid in high school and college, and been an avid collector since the 1950's. I would even take the story he tells with the rifle, (ie what do you know about it since you came into it's possession)which I didn't ask of him. He personally would not fake parts, but does buy rifles for resale as is. That said the stock has enough flaws that I am going to pass at the price. Stock was brutally sanded. I hate doing it, because it is the nicest pre-war k98k I have had the opportunity to look over excepting a standard model. the sanding the stock underwent is like a safe breaker sanding off his fingerprints so you don't leave a trace. So darn much history erased. The middle stock cartouche remains(as I defined a large eagle with swastika) but the Herr mark and drooped eagle cartouche is not present and the serial, which from my foggy memory should have been present on the bottom near the pistol grip is erased by heavy use of sandpaper : < {. buttplate ain't proud by 1/32 of an inch or better.
