1941 svt 40

I bought a Russian-refurb with the purple bolt some years ago when they came in. Can't remember the exact price, but it was under $300. Haven't shot it for a long time, but reading about them makes me want to dig it out again.

Ryan- I've got a bring back 41 dated and the bolt is in the white. It's all matching with the exception of the magazine. In fact it didn't have a magazine when found it.... I put one of those aftermarket mags in it. I need to find a WWII era mag for it. It's a different maker than the one photographed in the start of this thread- I can't remember the maker but it is the one with an arrow in a triangle. If anyone has a period mag they want to sell let me know.

Pat- If the rifle Gerbirgs is referring to is the one I think it is, then the story is legit. I remember the collection when it came in but he will have to elaborate. It's an interesting piece.

It sounds like your rifle is a Izhevsk. Bolts were not blued until late 1941. So your bolt should be in the white. I am not sure if Izhevsk ever blued bolts? I wouldn't think so. Izhevsk rifles are tougher to find than Tulas (which is the maker of my rifle in the first post). If it is a original matching rifle than that is a great find. However, finding a original mag is very very difficult to do. Ryan and I are always looking for them and have yet to come across any. But don't limit yourself to find a Izhevsk mag. Find any original mag. Please post pictures. We would love to see it. Thanks

My bring back has a bright bolt. Captured from the 6th SS at the Operation: Nordwind.

Please post pictures. SVT 40 rifles made before late 1941 will have their bolts in the white from the factory. After late 1941 Tula blued their bolts (after late 1941 Izhevsk and Podolsk stopped production). During refurb all bolts got blued. However, the color of bluing is different. Original factory blues are more reddish while refurbs are dark and purple in color. RyanE will chime in a correct me on any of my information (which all I have stolen from him and now pass off as my own findings. Ha ha ).

MD,
Here are some photos of the '41 dated SVT-40- let me know of anything specific you want to see.
I tried to post them all at once and it wouldn't go through so I'll do a couple a page.

R.Blue, It appears to be a very nice rifle. If you can please post a picture of the stock serial number and acceptance stamp on the right side. I would like to see if the finish is original. It appears to be. And look to see if bolt is numbered (underside when mag is removed). Your bolt carrier is numbered so I am sure it is. Bolt should be in the white. I don't think Izhevsk or Podolsk ever blued their bolts. Ryan? Where are you?

Congrats! Izhvsk SVT 40s are very very tough to find. As I mentioned just try to find a original mag from any maker. I am sure they are out there but they are hard to find (about as tough as the rifles). Early on Izhevsk got a lot of the small parts from Tula (mags included). It was not until midway through ??? 1941 that they started making all their own parts. Can't remember the exact time. Does your rifle have any Tula parts? Thanks for sharing.

You mean Podolsk. Izhevsk never had any trouble making their own parts.

From the pics, it appears to be a super condition early 1941 Izhevsk SVT40. All of the metal is original finish and original to the rifle (not matched during a later rework). It would be nice to see both sides of the butt also (CCCP roundel and acceptance stamp on one side, and the serial number on the other), but from what I can see, stock finish looks original also. Very, very nice! A nice Izhevsk is tough to find.

Its possible that some of the super late Izhevsk rifles had blued bolts, but its doubtful that anyone outside of Tula blued them in 1941. So far as we know, the earliest blued bolts show up in December 1941 production long after Izhevsk stopped production.

Thanks Dave. I need to post pictures here of my Podolsk also.

Here are some better photos-
Thanks for the information on it- Izhevsk manufacture. I never really looked to much into it- I seem to remember that's who made it-
What's the best reference book on the SVT rifles? Or are you guys compiling your own data?
