I knew these existed for the MP44's, but this is the first mention of one for the K98 that I have come across.

I had the opportunity to view this beauty at CFB Bordon (Bordon, Ontario - Canada) while one Temporary Duty. They also had a nice FG42 II but due to the glass, I couldn't get a nice pic and an MP43 and MP44, including several other cool small arms.

That's neat.

I'm moving to Barrie, 15 mins from the base.

Maybe I'll go snap so some pics.

I know a few guys there maybe I can get closer. Lol

MP 44 unit improperly attached to K989k? Somebody needs to check the full file on the piece. Won't be the first time a museum has screwed things up...

Agree with WaPrüf2....and Stan.... An MP-44 accessory, not K98-k.
Museums; those rascals pull the funniest stunts.
Reminds me of the time I saw a chrome plated Fallschirmjäger helmet in a museum display that was labeled as a "German Parade Helmet". Or, how about the Jap Type 99 rifle and the German LP-42 flare pistol on display in the Birdcage Saloon in Tombstone, AZ. (they were not appreciative when I pointed this out to them)

I was there January to Mid-February.

The entrance is free and the Commissionaires do the security.

The reason I believe it could have been a device for the K98 is they have an MP43 and MP44 in the museum and and in their description they mention that the device is generally associated with the MP44. If it was an MP44 device, why not just put it on their MP44? The question would be "Why go out of the way to purposely make a mistake and then justify it with no means?"

You need to see their records on the unit. When did they get the rifle? Where did they get it from? Was the device on the rifle when they got the rifle? If they record such things, did somebody on staff put the device on the rifle? Is there a separate record for the device? Is there a separate record for the rifle? If so, when did they get it and where did they get it from? If there are separate records for the rifle and the device, do the dates of acquisition and the source match or did the rifle come in a a different date and from a different source than the device? Good luck...
