This picture is from a WW2 Facebook Group I'm in, I thought it was interesting;

Those are really early T-34s. Winter camo. Probably winter of 41 or 42. I'm gonna go with Ukraine, maybe western Russia.

G.98/40?

Pat

I forgot to add, the comments on the Facebook page mentioned the tanks were in Defensive "ambush" positions, so prob early in the war.

It does look like a G.98/40, good catch.

Very cool picture. Notice his neighbor has the same car in his garage. If those were captured T34's, generally the Germans tried to paint a Balkenkreuz (or similar) on them, didn't they? So likely these were Soviets awaiting arrival of their visitors. They look like they are in hull defilade, which would mean prepared (at least partially) defensive positions. I think that is the Model 1941 T-34, the one with the super heavy crew hatch in the top of the turret. This ridiculous and overly heavy hatch had an irritating tendancy to jam, which more than once resulted in overcooked Soviet crewmen.

No disassembly hole in stock, barrel band and bayonet lug in front, receiver ring visible (reflections).

OK, how can you tell it's a 98/40?

What Absolut said. Also, look where the bolt handle is in relationship to the trigger. On a 98k those two things are fairly close. On a G98/40 the bolt handle is substantially in front of the trigger.

The one in the shed can't be seen from the air. If Rudel and his Stukas happen by, I'd rather be in the shed.

I figure the one in the shed is well hidden until the fighting starts. Once that happens the one in the shed has more exposure to everything a posed to just the turret with the one in the trench. I figure they are all scr*wed in an air attack as bombs would be dropped in that area getting everyone.
