I have never spent any time looking though the French Archive, and while it was disappointing how few hits and even fewer digitized documents there were, I did find some good photographs.

And capture piles still at Rennes, with a pile of slings. It looks like a lot of them were badly damaged.
Those rifles may have been repaired "Russian-capture" style (mixing whatever parts that were available). I wonder if they were reissued to French troops (perhaps sent to allies, like Romanians or Serbs).
