Hi! In some time I will be trying out my K98 as a hunting rifle. So far I haven't bought a sling for it. A part of me wants to buy an original sling, but I am not sure if it would be comfortable or if I would be able to use it without constantly thinking about damaging it. Would a repro sling still be comfortable? I really prefer being able to have the rifle slung over the back, without having to stabilizing it using my hands. What are your experiences with mauser slings?

M16/M4 carbine sling. Black synthetic cloth that's both comfortable and nearly indestructible. I think they're really pretty cheap too.

My repro sling works just fine. I have no trouble with it.
Is it possible to have the rifle slung on the back without having to stabilize it with hands?

Of course. Do what the German soldiers did. Put the rifle on your back with the sling across your chest. Muzzle up or down... It works.

You won't be reenacting, you'll be hunting. As it stands, both the original and repro K98k slings are not much more than limited adjustment carry straps. You'll want something you can easily and intuitively adjust while moving, and that will go well beyond just being a strap for carrying something. I'd recommend this:

Kyle's a great guy and his products are solid and thoroughly tested. This will give you more options, and attachment through the K98k's sling slot in the stock should not present a significant problem.
