An evolution of sorts...

Guys,

Had a few rifles out today for their "annual pampering" of Ballistol and gun oil and thought this was a cool picture.

Top to bottom:
-G98M Spandau 1917/18 (Also has the 1920 Property Mark)
-G98M Spandau 1918 with the turned down bolt & Recessed stock
-Also Navy (N.8223 on the rear sling swivel)
-Scrubbed DWM full Gew98 to k98 conversion
-1937 S/243 K98

Still looking for a matching 98b to complete the set but I have a feeling I'll be looking for a long time!

Seen a few like this and for a longtime I was undecided if it was just an old Imperial sniper stock re-utilized or some period alteration. Some 98b, in a fairly narrow range have bolt cutouts but no side sling arrangement, some oddly enough with matching straight handle bolts!

Plus a few Gew.98M with naval characteristics like these too (cutouts but no side sling arrangement), but I am not certain what to make of them.. I had some discussions with ScottB on the topic, as he owns a rifle or two but not sure if we ever got anywhere on the topic.

Beside they exist anyway.

I am pretty sure this (the 1918 Spandau) is one that was sold on Gunbroker in May/2006. If the same rifle it has a very cool fireproof (interwar build of an unused receiver) and the bolt has an "S" above the serial bolt flat.
The stock has some faint Imperial acceptance and cypher, and a toe repair. Came with a naval marked sling too, which matches some of the other modified (cutout) Gew.98M known.

Anyway, assuming its the same rifle its a pretty nice one- especially for the price it sold for back then!

Good show on the matching; I haven't found a matched bolt version of the turned down bolt G98M yet...

Simson,

This is the same rifle and I bought it in 1996 from gunbroker. Definitely the same rifle.

Unfortunately the stock disc was removed and filled with wood putty...at some point I'd like to restore it correctly...

Here are some photos of the bolt and receiver proofs (sorry about the bad pictures but it is 11:20 and dark outside)...

Mine is the SPANDAU/DZ over 1917/18 previously reported; original stock no. partly defaced but renumbered to match, found with mismatched straight bolt in it.
Stock has grasping grooves and Imp. inspected butt washer.

Stahlherm: What type of proofing is on the underside of the bolt of your bent bolt G98M? Imperial, Weimar, or what?

SH, Same rifle, as you say!

CB, the auction pics didn't show the bottom flat but a good question, - hopefully SH will let us see the bottom flat!

The bottom flat has a Weimer eagle and a second Weimer Eagle-6 proof mark.

Simson, I am shocked that you can remember a rifle from gunbroker from 4+ years ago..amazing!

I have a 40 GB database... easy to remember if you can locate it!

Thanks for the details on the bolt!
