Was watching this Gew 98 on GB:

Didn’t bid, since I recognized a few of the handles biding.

I have a safety, gas shield and cocking piece all serialized: “25”. Not sure if the proofs are correct.

Obviously Rifle went through depot work. But those parts are currently mismated. Period, no idea?

If they are period mismatched. Then can discard this post…

Navy rifle. Just my experience but some depots simply renumbered the bolt handle & left the other bolt parts alone.

Bolt body is period depot renumbered, but striker assembly is mismatched. A correct navy bolt and bolt parts from this era would have c/S acceptance, though the depot work could have been navy related. Of course without a buttplate it's impossible to tell who did the renumbering, so from a research perspective its useless. That said, matched bolts on navies, even depot matched are rare, which is likely why jordan pushed first me then Sam out of the way on it. Need to send that seller a congratulations on the haul, bet he never thought he'd get that much for a gun so heavily cleaned and missing so many parts.

Highest DWM/01 recorded, a 500 jump and lends some weight to the possibility DWM broke into the b-block... wish the stock-unit were original to first issue, - true this is period done but the factory stock with issuance unit would be especially helpful.

Most DWM/01 w/period stocks are W.K. but one is W.D., -but odds are strong (4 to 1) this was a W.K issued rifle. This stock is probably off a latter year rifle, before 1904 but not 1901. (based upon current trends, which admittedly is scanty)

***Considering rarity and desirability, and apparently crappy rc's are pulling upwards of $800, I think the rifle is a screamer of a bargain, though a nightmare as a "project rifle" the bolt is its saving grace.

Well, reading through a few of the comments here. I can see that winning this auction might have ruffled some feathers with a few people. And honestly, I don't see where I pushed anybody out of the way. When it's an online gun auction. If the members here must know why I went after this rifle. One of my main collecting focuses on Imperial collecting. Are the Imperial KM rifles, and Jagers. Plus, I have must if not all the parts to completely restore such a rifle. Such as the matching early DWM crown S complete trigger guard group. I also have a lead on the rest of the parts that are needed to finish this project. As well as more Naval bolts if needed for other restorations in the future. It also doesn't help that I have the unit matching bayonet for this rifle too.

I also don't believe the KM DWM 1901 with the W.K marked disk that was once Mike's rifle is the period factory stock. Being the stock is not factory, but an armorer's replacement instead. I also know where there is one more DWM 1901 with a W.D stock disk but cannot share the serial number for the owner's privacy. He also mentioned he has a WMO KM rifle. When I asked if the date on the rifle was either 1910 or 1911. He was surprised I knew. He told me 1911.

You can say my name Jordan, if you can remember it. This is all in the public sphere—this forum, Gun Broker, and other venues we all frequent—we all know who everyone is so it does you no good to speak of “a few people.”
There is no need to defend yourself, you are completely in your rights to outbid me, as well other people here, or merely run people up. It doesn’t go unnoticed but usually the people you do it are polite and don’t say anything. Notice that it’s only you who does it though? You seem to be as inept with social cues as you are with punctuation so I’ll explain it. Not bidding against people you know, and who may have helped you before, is fundamentally an act of respect. For someone who brags constantly in your posts about how gracious and helpful you are to other collectors, you don’t show any real respect to other collectors if it means you won’t get something you want. No one demands that you respect others, but if you do, people in turn tend to respect you, which for example can be helpful when you post want to buy ads for Jäger marked weapons.
Either way, glad you got the Gew, not only because you wanted it so badly but because you saved me from overpaying for a harshly cleaned mismatch. I look forward to seeing the photos, but please, spare us of any story like the one above. If you’re really that knowledgeable your posts will show it.

Guys-- stop before this gets out of hand. I won't have this here-- I'm all for free speech, just not when things get personal.

Bottom line: There's been an extraordinarily high level of decorum in this section. It will stay that way as long as Paul and I are in charge.

There has also been a lot gentlemen's agreements particularly in the field of not bidding against each other. It's always a two-way street though and I encourage dialogue between the members so that people hold each other accountable. Ultimately, should someone choose to bid against someone who has historically refrained from bidding against them, they are well within their rights to not extend such courtesy in the future. It's as simple as that. It's a free market and we have been unusually fortunate in that members typically haven't stepped on each other's toes. We have a great community here; let's keep it that way.

I have to agree with Chris…. I have tried to stay away from running up against members here that I know their handles on GB rifles that they are bidding on. Though I do not know everyones handle….. There is really good group of knowledgeable guys here that have helped me a lot.

I don't remember bragging about being generous, and helping people Cyrus. I guess checking my Springfield research service books for everybody for free. I guess we might considered that being generous. I didn't do it for bragging points and awards though. I did it because I wanted to be nice, and help the members here. Different topic anyway so I won't go in to it.

I also don't remember that I have to consult with you if you want a rifle on gunbroker or not. Being how you've never contacted me personally here in a PM or even ever. Plus I don't think me, and you have ever done a deal with each other in the first place. So what collector friendship, or respect do we really have with each other? Oh well I will just enjoy my over cleaned, mismatched rifle then. You all have a good day then.

Ok we are done here. I don't think anyone has anything to gain by commenting further. You guys can continue this discussion in private and figure things out between you---or just not engage each other further. I don't care-- let's keep this to collecting and research.
