Hello how much slack/play should I have in the gas system with his kit? Right now I have two washer/shims and it’s tight with very little/no play. Is that okay? I feel like with 1 shim in place theirs still too much play.

As little play as possible. Your rod will take a beating eventually (not to mention the carrier) from slamming if there is too much play. A little play is OK but its best to get it as close as possible.
