That looks like a good DDR parade helmet. These are a bit different from the steel M56 combat helmet and can appear similar to the B/II prototype.
There were about 3 different styles and made of some type of lightweight plastic. Edge is un-turned similar to the B/II.

How would you know this is a steel helmet ?

The photo IMO is consistent with the plastic parade helmet, even down to the slightly cheaper grade chinstrap found on the parade helmets.

In your opening post, looking at the last picture, the helmet certainly appears to be made of steel.
I know nothing of helmets but quite a bit about steel.

I'm not sure which photo we are referring to, but this photo depicts a commonly encountered plastic DDR parade helmet, regarless of it being listed as "steel". Steel M56 DDR helmets have a turned rim similar to the German M42 helmet due to the way they were made (likely a hot rapid-stamping method). This parade helmet was probably made using liquid plastic poured into a mold. Notice no turned rim. No rust.
