Banner Chinese contract

Picked this one up today. I don't know the year? Banner Chinese contract with a strange trigger guard. Nice stock with matching But Plate. Bolt is total Mismatch . also seems counter bored as the rounds push in far in the muzzle? Import stamped. Threw 400 for it. Figured if it is a nothing rifle the parts would be worth having especially the stock.

one more as this wont let me do more than one at a time????

Interesting Chinese Banner.

The trigger guard is post war Czech production often referred to as a "winter trigger guard". The 8x57 stamping is part of an import mark.

With the bullet going so far into the muzzle I would suspect the barrel is just badly worn or pitted. This is pretty common on Chinese Mausers and I have one that a 8mm bullet will literally fall down the bore.

How do I determine the year on this one?

Hi Mike,
There is no date stamped on Kar98k's sold and exported to China. However, a total of 100,120 Kar98k's were shipped in large and small lots between March of 1938 and April of 1939. 50,000 were shipped in 1938, the rest in '39, Judging by the serial number on your rifle, it would appear likely that those components bearing that number were probably made in 1938.
Regards,
John

Thank you John,

Most Chinese K98ks will have a barrel code stamped on the underside of the barrel (requires taking apart).
The barrel code could predate the shipment by as much as 6-8 months but gets you closer.
Shipments to China ended in the summer of 1938.
