Bavarian Rebuild Kar88 "Amberg 1895"

As many of you already know Erfurt, Haenel and Schilling were the Kar88 manufacturers. Amberg did not produce new 88 carbines. However whether it was Amberg or Ingolstadt, many were reworked/rebuilt in Bavaria. While there are a few Gunboards threads on some of the reworks, they all had a variety of different features (re-stamped stock cartouches, etc..) If a receiver was damaged significantly, Amberg Gew88 receivers were used as spares. CB had a bolt mm one (sold for a woefully low amount at auction like much of his stuff), and Cj556/Marc has another from SoS a while back.

A few interesting features:

1) Amberg receiver with an added "GF" Bavarian fireproof (assumed added due to the new receiver/barrel/bolt, as typical Gew88s did not carry a fire proof in the location)
2) Amberg barrel
3) Bolt appears to be off a Suhl carbine
4) Cancelled Train Battalion unit on rear band and 6th Chevauleger on nosecap.
5) Single RR acceptance
6) Note the block suffix on the barrel shroud and script on the receiver
7) Note the two punch marking on some parts--- this was recently discussed on Jory's depot 98M.

Condition-wise it's a screamer.

In any case, a nice example of a rather difficult type of rebuild.

Beautiful carbine. Always liked the Gew88 and its variants, finding one in Imperial trim in any kind of condition is very tough. Thanks for the nice presentation and history lesson too.

I went back and rephotographed this one over the weekend and posted some additional thoughts in the original thread now that we've seen another and have some additional perspective on Bavarian practices.
