Hello,

In the process of acquiring my first K98k. Found this rifle online. Seller describes it as all matching. I am not an expert on K98s so I ask to tap into the vast knowledge available on this forum. Does this BNZ ”check” out?

I'd probably like more photos, especially of the bolt however it seems pretty legit for a no letter block '42. Font looks right. Steyr supplied milled bottom metal and h band should be correct too I believe. At first I thought the 6s on the bottom metal were stamped over a 5 but now I think I'm probably just seeing things.

I like what I see. Pictures of bolt would be nice if it's advertised as all numbers matching. Dang that firing proof on the LR looks like it was stamped hard.

I thought the floor plate numbers looked kind of look weird at first too but I bet with a better quality would show they are good. After zooming in on my phone it seems it's just the normal weirdness of the steyr stamps/font.

Agree with heavy mech. Looks like early 1942 enough to still have barrel s/n and H band. Those two features seem to have changed by the c block looking at the photo reference. Bolt photos needed though.

This rifle lacks the caliber stamp on the top of the barell/reciever. Is this typical for BNZ made K98s?

Those are some very unusual sixes indeed. Very flat on top, like a numeral 5. Don't think I've ever seen a font like that, but they're probably legit.

It's funny using typical or normal with Steyr because they seemed to go off the rails pretty early. Lots of errors noted in their production. We just had a fairly early right receiver inspection stamp upside down.

From what I can see of the barrel code it seems fine so I don't suspect any hijinks.

It'll probably shoot okay, but the bore is nothing to write home about. It's dark and full of pits. Otherwise it's a decent looking rifle.

Haha, you must have really high standards. Most K98s I’ve found have bores that look like this.

haha, no not really. Just because most of the K98ks that you see have bores like this, doesn't make it a good bore. There are plenty out there that have much better bores. That's just like saying something is beautiful for its age. That's making an excuse for its condition. Judge it for what it looks like without any excuses.

Absolutely agree. For me, a rifle's bore condition has always been the primary consideration, even on collector's items. Matching numbers and non-messed with condition are a close second. When a rifle has a neglected bore, the joy of ownership just isn't the same.

A new question came up,

Where would the numbering be on the buttplate? Can’t see any markings.
Also, would the action screws been numbered as well?

The bore is dark indeed, but judging by the bullet test it appears to have plenty of meat left to it. I've seen bores like this shoot amazingly well, but they're always a bitch to get clean and are usually worth the trouble.

Agree with prior posts your K98 looks good. IMHO A lot of dark bores clean up well after being shot.

For me bore condition doesn't mean much when purchasing a collectible rifle. I am not going to shoot it. Matching and unmessed with is far more important.
