BNZ 45 r block bolt

Hi. There are several r blocks in the pic reference section but none show the bolt bottom which is what I’m unsure about. What is the significance of the 2? The bolt is obviously really rough but I’ve never seen a bolt top that had been machined to the extent that it bleeds down the handle like this. Possible filing and renumbering? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I have no idea on the 2 but yeah that is one rough bolt. The machining is horrific. Looks like the handle is slightly crooked and the bolt flat machining is off center too. And those turning rings down the handle and on the knob might be the worst I've ever seen. Seems totally legit to me.

I love these BNZ 45's. Interesting that your should isn't left cast considering the matching on the bolt handle alone. Great gun! Post more pics if your got them

I see how 'deep' the serial pad is cut but I'm sticking with it was forged crooked, and machined crooked. I (poorly) mapped what I see as the evidence of it being jigged up and machined crooked. You can see the difference in the flank cuts on the top and bottom very clearly. Also the gutter cut is crooked... obviously IMHO. I think this is all as made.

I've also come to love these late Steyr guns. Yours is pretty rough. Seems r block are worse than t block in some areas.

Probably no correlation, but the tank works at Steyr was bombed on March 20, 1945. Could that have disrupted K98k production? I’m not sure of the geography distance (if any) from the tank works and K98k production at Steyr. For that matter, I don’t know when the “r” block was being built. So, I really don’t know much.:moon:

There was a dispersal program at Steyr. Rifle production was moved to Molln for assembly about 20 km SSW of Steyr. Some of the parts were made in Gusen. I think more important programs took over at Steyr proper. Aircraft engines?

Yes, heavier stuff like vehicles too, like the aforementioned tanks. Nibelungen Works was smack between Gusen and Steyr. It was also the most modern and advanced tank manufacturing facility in the Reich. It therefor received quite a bit of attention from the bombers.

That’s a beautiful gun you have there. That bolt is the worst I’ve ever seen, which of course then makes it the BEST Steyr bolt I’ve ever seen!! They weren’t rejecting too much by the end. I agree that it was probably forged and/or machined crooked. The “2” is a Steyr mystery, you can see single digit numbers all over Steyr rifles, just like yours and also in other places on the rifles, but I don’t think anyone knows what they mean. Look at some threads with other late Steyr rifles disassembled and you’ll see them. Numbers 1, 2, and 3 are pretty common. Production line? Assembly line? Shift? No idea.

That’s pretty bad, about as bad as they get.

I have no other pics because I didn’t buy it on account of the replaced stock. Id have no realistic expectation of finding a correct one.

Oh I didn't see any mention of the stock. I guess you're certain it was not the correct stock?? Late Steyr stocks are hard to find. Ask me how I know.

I didn’t see the stock mentioned or shown either. Depending on condition and price it could have been worth it.

Its in some sort of sanded and unmarked semi kriegs which has a band spring, phosphate (?) bayo lug, and no stock disc.

I dunno, just me personally but if the rest of the gun was good and the stock original but modified I might go for it just to get that bolt! Of course the other metal would have to be legit to make the price very high at all. The late war hurried guns, especially Steyr guns, turn me on.
