Could have been a coating they added to stop it from rusting or a previous poor weld redone with a costing to make it stronger?

My theories are twofold. As I mentioned either added before or after the welding was done. I Would say probably after. If seen it enough times to know its not something post war done. They either applied this to seal the weld or something else all together ? Slag or whatever coated the rod or stick when welding ? As I said I welded a bit in high school and certain welds you use a pick hammer to de-slag the weld. Arc I think ? These is obviously looks to be electric welding even though a good gas welder could weld steel even better. Not sure 100% just figured id highlight this.

It's hard to say. I stopped doing Mass shows many years ago and as you know decided to drive to PA to do shows. You have to put the time in and sit through huge dry spells to get anything. Not everyone has the patients for it. I still work and have not a whole lot of down time so I dread sitting in a hall starring at the walls of a show instead of being outside enjoying the beach ect. Anyways, to my point all my Mass buying was done privately through old collections some of which I helped sell here. I couldn't even tell you the last thing I bought @ a mass show. Florida is a different market all together and Ive been down here one year five months. I'm in a area where its a mix of newer and older development. All I can tell anyone is to NETWORK ! find other collectors/ dealers give them your info and see what happens. This one was shite luck but, I paid due to wanting it as the lucky SOB who grabbed it is a collector /dealer. He was going to keep it, but I threw enough $$ at him till he cracked. Also bought an Ar41 back in dec/jan from an old collector who has more stuff but, is slowly selling here and there.. He knows what he has and gets good $ for it..

I asked a buddy if mine who is an actual welder as I was curious and he said the following: 'That is an old style welding. They used poor quality rod and it was probably coated with something like cow shite to keep the oxygen off weld'. I don't know if he's serious about the cow dung or not but the entertainment value in his comment is there. Awesome find again!

Based off the large scale production of these stamped bands I would lean more towards electric welding VS hand gas welding. There are two distinct types. byf and bnz share one type and dot/dou share another.
I think Bruce or Farb picked up on the welding difference years back. The Czech bands have a much cleaner tighter weld.

That makes a lot more sense from a mass production standpoint...I'd lean more towards that idea! Regardless, its a really cool characteristic of the band.
