What is this, and how is it used?

Tks Peter. Responses don't get any better ;) I believe I heard that the handle end will fit in the groove on the cocking piece to pull it back as well when the dreaded decocking brainfart during bolt takedown occurs. I've never tried it.

Yes it can be used to re-cock the bolt when the brainfart occurs.
But, I would not use it for that purpose routinely, since the tool is liable to be damaged by repeated use.

I think the groove Hambone is referring to is on the rear side of the cocking piece. The spoon edge of the tool does fit nicely into the notch and will cock the bolt. It looks like it can be also done as mentioned in the previous post, but is harder on the tool as noted.

Just tried Hambone's method for re-cocking with the spoon tool.
It works much better than the other method.
Live and learn.

Thanks!
