Hey guys looking for a cleaning rod for my DOT 44 However its a bit unique (for me at least) The rod is the skinny type as it won't fit an m48 or other Mauser Cleaning rod. Plus I don't know if its a 12 inch or 8inc one?

Pics of the DOT can be found in the lower thread. Any help or F/S lads would help! Thanks :happy0180: IMG_0946.jpgIMG_0941.jpg

K98s dont use a 8 inch rod.

12 inch or 10 inch rod.

Yours would take a 12 inch rod.

And there is so such thing as an RC rod as RC rilfes dont come with cleaning rods.

ahhh ok thanks Canadian Know a good place to buy a 12 inch Rod or recommend a site?

I want to say that diameter of the hole is about 2cm or .2 inches correct? looks really skinny and just want to make sure I got the right cleaning rod. Thanks :biggrin1:

2cm is like 7/8" lol
id say the rods are about 3 or 4mm maybe. About 3/16"

Not sure where you could order one. Repro can be had on ebay easily.

K98 rods are exactly 0.192" in diameter. In order to find out if you need a 12" or 10" rod (12" should be correct for late war stocks) straighten out a wire coat hanger and push it into the cleaning rod hole until it bottoms out. Mark it right underneath the front sight and you know the required rod length. Original late war rods are on FeeBay and Gunbroker. Be prepared to pay about $60 to $80. I have found cheap originals on Craigslist.

Nice that is a great idea! I was thinking about a pipe cleaner but coat hanger sounds better.

Yeah I wouldn't mind getting a repo just to save money. Owner I bought it from had the original cleaning rod I believe but lost it over time. O well be good to get the DOT 44 back in its a complete form. Thanks for the heads up and links.

I will take pics of it once she comes in the mail.

well I did the coat hanger trick and your not going to believe this. So from bottom to the front sight post is 8 inches. That doesn't seem right does it? I looked down the hole with a light and saw no obstructions or anything. Maybe I am crazy or ignorant?

Take the rifle out of the wood. Make sure it has a little steel cleaning rod retaining nut in the barrel channel.
I'm not sure when but some rifles weren't drilled for them. I'm sure one of the guys here knows.

Has your rifle been duffle cut and repaired? Does it look like the wooden fore end between the two front metal bands has been cut and glued back together, about 1" in front of the tip of the upper hand guard?

Just checked and everything is all intact and in one place. I removed the wood and everything is all matching and I see no marks of repairs or glue. There is no drill mark on the barrel of the channel. Smooth as can be all the way to the receiver.

If you have the gun apart, the 10" rod nut will be under the lower band on the outside of the stock.
12.5" will be inside the channel of the stock.
A quick way to tell without taking the gun all the way apart is to just remove the lower band and look for the rod nut. If no nut = 12.5" rod.

I don't see a cleaning rod nut. Strange looking hand guard, too. Looks like its tip was shortened, also the laminate layers don't appear to be horizontal. The stock is mid to late war but the H-shaped upper barrel band is something I wouldn't necessarily expect to see past 1941. It doesn't match the bayonet lug either. Is there a serial number on the barrel band and if so, does it match the rifle?

Those pictures don't help.

You have a '44 dot white glue stock with maybe a matching white glue handguard.

Please take a close up picture of inside the channel, just below the lower band or 12.5" from the bayonet lug.
