Yes, it is a mark left by the second owner, a resistance fighter who scavenged the rifle from the first owner (the german). It’s a trophy, and kept hidden since.
This rifle came from a little city near Auxerres, i’m the first « legal » owner.

Anyone watch The Walking Dead, Daryl Dixon?
Takes place in France and the French female lead has a very similar K98k to the OP one

Neat information. Do you know any details about the resistance fighter or how exactly he got the rifle? And did you purchase it directly from them?

Congrats on a nice honest dot 1943, always nice to find one that hasn't been sanded and matching.

The gunsmith gave me the contact information of the person who brought it back to him. He's the son of the person who picked up the rifle. I need to contact him to get the full story.

Prices in France will be the same as in your country in a few years, many sellers no longer hesitate to sell them for around €2,000 (matching number)
